Andrew Garfield, known for his striking appearance and versatility, recently shared why he lost a significant acting role early in his career. Despite his reputation for being able to portray charming and rugged characters, Garfield revealed that his physical looks played a key role in a missed opportunity that could have greatly affected his career trajectory.
The Quest for Prince Caspian and Early Career Challenges
Garfield’s youthful appearance belies his true age of 42, which has helped him maintain a diverse range of roles over the years. Early in his career, after making his film debut in Robert Redford’s Lions for Lambs (2007) and guest-starring in Doctor Who, he was originally set to appear in Justin Chadwick’s The Other Boleyn Girl but had his scenes cut. Around this time, he auditioned for the role of Prince Caspian in the 2008 film adaptation of CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Reflecting on this audition, Garfield told Variety,
“I remember I was so desperate,”
he said,
“I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia, and I thought, ‘This could be it, this could be it’,”
continuing,
“And that handsome, brilliant actor Ben Barnes ended up getting the role. I think it was down to me and him, and I remember I was obsessed.”
The role eventually went to Ben Barnes, who was relatively unknown at the time but has since maintained a steady career in film and television.
Competition and Insights Behind the Casting Decision
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, released in 2008, continued the adventures of the Pevensie siblings as they joined forces with Prince Caspian to reclaim his throne from his corrupt uncle, portrayed by Sergio Castellitto. Barnes’ performance as the noble prince became an iconic part of the series.

Interestingly, Nicholas Hoult also auditioned for the same role but later admitted to giving his worst-ever audition performance, highlighting the high stakes for young actors competing for such a coveted part. Garfield was driven to understand why he lost out, and after persistent queries, his agent reluctantly explained,
“She eventually just broke under my incessant nagging,”
Garfield revealed,
“She was like, ‘It’s because they don’t think you’re handsome enough, Andrew’.”
The Aftermath and Reflection on Career Paths
Although this rejection could have been a major setback, both Garfield and Hoult went on to achieve substantial success in their acting careers, starring in a variety of prominent roles. Meanwhile, Barnes’ profile remains strong but comparatively lower in public attention than the other two actors. Their journeys illustrate how subjective casting decisions are and how outcomes can shape careers unpredictably.
Garfield’s revelation adds an intriguing layer to discussions about the role of appearance in Hollywood casting, especially for actors pursuing visually iconic roles like that of Prince Caspian. The way in which this experience shaped his career reflects on the broader industry challenges faced by many talented performers.
