Michael Stipe made a surprise appearance alongside actor Michael Shannon and indie rocker Jason Narducy to perform R.E.M.’s songs These Days and The Great Beyond at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on Saturday night. This moment marked the first time in 18 years that Stipe, the former R.E.M. frontman, has performed either track live, amplifying excitement during the ongoing Michael Shannon R.E.M. tribute tour.
Shannon and Narducy have been touring extensively across the United States, commemorating the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s album Lifes Rich Pageant. The tribute run has been gaining attention not only for its setlist but for the involvement of key figures behind the original band. Stipe’s unexpected arrival sparked an enthusiastic reaction from the audience, who erupted as he took the stage. Reflecting on the experience, he told the crowd,
You can’t imagine how insane it is to hear these songs performed by people so talented,
Michael Stipe said.
I’ve always been right in the middle of the songs, so to hear them is really fucking surreal.
Revisiting Classic R.E.M. Songs After Nearly Two Decades
Shortly after his remarks, Stipe joined Shannon and Narducy, stepping comfortably into the spotlight to deliver his vocals with familiar ease. Despite the long gap since his last live renditions, Stipe’s distinctive voice matched well with the instrumental backing, rejuvenating classics from the band’s repertoire. Both These Days, originally from Lifes Rich Pageant, and The Great Beyond, known from the Man on the Moon soundtrack, sounded fresh during this rare live performance.
The collaboration between Stipe, Shannon, and Narducy is not entirely new. Earlier in 2024, Stipe appeared with Shannon and Narducy at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, where although he did not sing, all original R.E.M. bandmates reunited on stage together for the first time in 17 years. That year also saw a brief reunion performance of R.E.M. at their Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Ongoing Tribute Tour and Future Shows
In 2025, Stipe again joined Shannon and Narducy to perform the track Pretty Persuasion during shows in both Athens and Brooklyn. The ongoing tribute tour celebrating Lifes Rich Pageant started on February 11th in Denver and continues with six remaining shows scheduled in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago (including two performances), Minneapolis, and Bloomington. Fans still have the opportunity to attend these final concerts before the tour concludes.
This tribute tour not only honors the legacy of R.E.M.’s work but also highlights the impact of their music across decades, with original and new performers bridging the past and present. Stipe’s appearances provide a significant connection to the band’s historic sound and evoke substantial enthusiasm among longtime followers and newer audiences alike.
