Cillian Murphy Denies Voldemort Role Amid Casting Rumors

Paul Bettany clarified recent speculation about his potential involvement as Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series during the Saturn Awards on March 8. The WandaVision actor confirmed to ScreenRant that HBO has not contacted him regarding the role, effectively dismissing any rumors about his casting.

He explained,

“I haven’t heard anything about that,”

when questioned, and added,

“I mean I’m a big fan of the IP, and I’m a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about it,”

emphasizing his lack of engagement with the project.

Background of HBO’s Harry Potter Adaptation

HBO is producing an extensive television adaptation that will explore J.K. Rowling’s seven books, dedicating an entire season to each. This ambitious project is scheduled for release in early 2027, building anticipation among fans for a fresh take on the beloved series.

Cillian Murphy’s Response to Dark Lord Casting Rumors

In addition to Bettany, Cillian Murphy’s name has also circulated as a possible successor to Ralph Fiennes in the role of Voldemort. Despite the speculation that emerged last year, Murphy promptly refuted these claims. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he praised Fiennes as “an absolute acting legend” and admitted,

“really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does.”

Murphy later made it clear in an interview with The Times that he is “categorically not” portraying Voldemort, putting an end to any further casting rumors surrounding him.

Current Cast and Future Uncertainties

The series has confirmed several key roles, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, Alastair Stout as Ron, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Despite these announcements, the identity of the actor who will bring Voldemort to life remains undisclosed, leaving one of the franchise’s most iconic characters shrouded in mystery.

As production advances, audiences remain eager to learn who will step into the dark wizard’s shoes and how this adaptation will handle the character’s complex legacy within the Harry Potter universe.
