Kathleen Kennedy, former Lucasfilm president and current producer on The Mandalorian and Grogu projects, has confirmed that Grogu will not develop the ability to speak in either the upcoming Mandalorian series or the planned Grogu movie. In a recent conversation with Variety, Kennedy emphasized how Grogu’s silence is a deliberate part of his character, reinforcing the unique way fans connect with him through emotion rather than dialogue.
Maintaining Grogu’s Expressive Connection Without Words
Kennedy described Grogu as
“another perfect example of a character that has to emote and you have to feel connected to, and he never speaks a word.”
She further noted that audiences will grow even more attached to Grogu on the big screen, while reaffirming that “he never says a word.” Despite Yoda’s known, though limited, broken English, Grogu’s quiet nature will remain intact in future storytelling, ensuring he retains his distinct appeal.
Challenges of Grogu’s Character Development in Future Stories
There is natural curiosity about whether Grogu might someday evolve by learning to speak or grow older. However, questions linger about Lucasfilm’s awareness of the character’s long-term survival and marketability if such changes occurred. Unlike other long-lived species in fiction, stretching Grogu’s story too far without progression may undermine his charm and relevance. Kennedy’s decision to keep Grogu non-verbal might be a wise move to preserve his iconic status without compromising the character’s essence.
Leadership Transition and Mentorship at Lucasfilm
Kennedy also discussed her role in preparing new leadership at Lucasfilm, particularly mentoring Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. She shared,
“It didn’t just happen six months ago. I spent 10 years talking Dave [Filoni] into gradually stepping into live action. He had so much experience in animation. He’s so knowledgeable about Star Wars and loves it so much, it’s really been a 10-year mentoring process for both of them. Lynwen [Brennan] came out of Industrial Light & Magic. She was my GM the entire time. I would argue that the transition has been really pretty seamless.”
Future Prospects for The Mandalorian and Grogu
The upcoming projects, including The Mandalorian season and the Grogu movie, will serve as key indicators of Kennedy’s legacy within Lucasfilm. While the performances of these productions remain to be seen, they will also reflect how effectively Filoni and Brennan have stepped into their leadership roles. The mixed results anticipated from these releases may highlight both the strengths and weaknesses present during Kennedy’s tenure.
As fans await the unfolding of Grogu’s story, uncertainty remains about how long the franchise can sustain the character’s widespread popularity without introducing speech. The ongoing question persists: how long can the silent appeal of Grogu continue to captivate audiences around the world?
