Steve Carell on Rooster: Why This Comedy Could Be Special

Co-created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the HBO comedy series Rooster stars Steve Carell as Greg Russo, a man who often behaves inappropriately yet exudes confidence. The series premiered in early 2026, and Carell’s portrayal of Greg Russo, a writer who has never attended college but tries to connect with his daughter Katie, who is a professor at Ludlow College, immediately draws comparisons to Carell’s iconic role as Michael Scott from NBC’s The Office. However, in this new series, Carell’s character balances flaws with self-assurance, setting it apart from previous roles.

At a virtual press conference promoting the series, Carell described Greg Russo’s personality, emphasizing that despite Russo’s shortcomings, he is not a caricature.

“I didn’t want him to be some sort of schlub who lacks everything that Rooster has. He’s a fairly confident guy. He’s not a cartoon,”

Carell explained.

Plot and Character Dynamics within Rooster

The show’s storyline centers on Russo’s efforts to recover from a painful divorce while repairing his strained relationship with his daughter Katie. Adding complexity to the plot, Katie faces turmoil in her own marriage. Her husband, Archie, portrayed by Phil Dunster, is entangled in an affair with his graduate student, Sunny, played by Lauren Tsai. These layered personal conflicts fuel the narrative throughout the ten-episode season.

What Makes Rooster Different: Ensemble Chemistry and Creative Passion

Steve Carell shared that the collective spirit among the cast and crew convinced him that Rooster would be unique. He likened his experience to that of The Office, highlighting the equal importance of every contributor.

“Honestly, it reminds me of my experience on The Office in terms of the cast [where] no component was more important than any other. We were an ensemble, and that includes cast, crew, writers, producers, everybody. We just wanted it to be good,”

Carell said.

He also reflected on the strong creative environment behind the show.

“You can have all the best components… great writing, great everything, and you just don’t know. But just based on the character of the people here and the amount of joy and fun we had doing it, there was a sense of joy to it, and for me, that was everything. And if it turns out to be a great show, that’s icing on the cake. I think it was a really rewarding experience creatively. I thought all the components, all the acting, all the writing, the sets, the design, there was a lot of care put into this show. And you could tell when you were there that people really cared deeply about it,”

he added.

Why Carell Chose to Return to Comedy

Carell revealed that his decisions on roles are guided less by the novelty of characters and more by the people he wishes to collaborate with. Speaking about his involvement with Rooster, he mentioned,

“It’s mostly a matter of people that I would like to work with and creators that I’d like to work with. And I was a huge fan of Bill and Matt, and when they called me, I thought, ‘Well, this could be something really special.’ Like a partnership with people that you admire. That’s what I’m most intrigued by, and to work with great actors,”

he explained.
