Actress Rachel Zegler has once again responded to criticism following her casting in Disney’s 2025 live-action remake of Snow White. The film’s performance at the box office reportedly resulted in losses of about $170 million for Disney. Much of the backlash has stemmed from accusations that the movie was overly “woke” and from backlash directed at Zegler’s political commentary, particularly her tweets concerning the storyline and her views on the Middle East.
Addressing Identity and Safety Concerns
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Zegler shared the difficulties she experienced, including threats to her safety, due to her Colombian heritage. Some critics opposed her playing Snow White because of her ancestry. She expressed frustration at being caught between multiple identities, stating,
“I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for ‘West Side Story’ and too much of another for ‘Snow White,’”
highlighting the challenge of public perception. She further remarked,
“I do think there’s an argument to be made that, in the public eye at least, when you’re two things, you’re simultaneously nothing. But I refuse to assimilate for anybody else’s comfort,”
underscoring her refusal to conform to others’ expectations.
Political Views Fuel Further Controversy
Zegler’s public statements about the original film’s portrayal of the heroine and her vocal support for Palestinians in Gaza have intensified the backlash. In August 2024, she posted on X (formerly Twitter), “and always remember, free palestine.” This drew criticism especially since her co-star, Gal Gadot—who portrayed the Evil Queen—has served in the Israel Defense Forces. Despite the controversy, Zegler has not withdrawn her remarks. She emphasized in the interview,

“I’ve said what I feel, and that will always be a testament to my core beliefs as a human. That’s where I stand.”
Navigating Public Life and Advocacy
While Zegler acknowledges that speaking out can be challenging, she also recognizes the importance of timing and effectiveness. She explained,
“There’s an understanding that the temptation to speak doesn’t always mean that it must be done, and that there are a lot of opportunities to make more meaningful change than a tweet.”
This reflects her awareness of the impact of social media statements versus other forms of activism.
The Personal Toll of Backlash
The intensity of the public reaction has taken an emotional toll on Zegler. She admitted that had she anticipated the dangers to her personal safety, she might have taken more drastic steps to distance herself from the online environment:
“just thrown my phone into the ocean.”
Looking Ahead: The Impact on Zegler’s Career and Public Image
Rachel Zegler’s experience highlights the complexities actors face when balancing personal beliefs with public roles, especially in politically charged environments. As Disney’s Snow White continues to draw attention, both for its artistic reception and the surrounding controversy, the dialogue around diversity and free expression in Hollywood remains heated. Zegler’s stance may influence conversations about identity representation and the risks artists face when engaging with political issues publicly.
