She used to be fluent in the Irish language and retains some phrases, and she is also conversant in French. In addition to her work on screen, Balfe became a patron of World Child Cancer in 2014 and has raised substantial funds for the organization, including by running the London Marathon in April 2018. In August 2020 she launched Forget Me Not, a Scottish-based small-batch gin, with a portion of proceeds going to fund arts programmes.
