His paternal grandfather was of Italian descent, with roots tracing back to Ripacandida in the Italian region of Basilicata. Sinise graduated from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois, and later attended Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, where he has remained a supportive alumnus.

In 1974, Gary Sinise co-founded the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago with friends Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry.
