James Peter Maxwell Dornan, known professionally as Jamie Dornan, is a Northern Irish actor, model, and musician born on 1 May 1982 in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation for compelling performances across television and film, ranging from gripping crime drama to high-profile studio franchises. The recipient of two Irish Film and Television Awards, he has also been nominated for a British Academy Television Award and a Golden Globe Award, and in 2020 was named one of Ireland’s greatest film actors by The Irish Times.
Early Life and Background
Jamie Dornan was born on 1 May 1982 in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, and grew up in the suburbs of Belfast. His mother, Lorna, died of pancreatic cancer when he was sixteen, a loss that shaped much of his early outlook. His father, Jim Dornan, was a respected obstetrician and gynaecologist who had once considered a career in acting and who died in March 2021 from complications related to COVID-19. Dornan has two older sisters: Liesa, who works for Disney in London, and Jessica, a fashion designer based in Falmouth, Cornwall. He is a first cousin, twice removed, of the classic Hollywood actress Greer Garson, and his grandparents on both sides of his family were Methodist lay preachers.
He attended and boarded at Methodist College Belfast, where he played rugby and participated actively in the drama department.
