Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire on 13 July 1940, the son of Gladys (née Barrowclough), a weaver and textile worker, and Alfred Stewart, a regimental sergeant major in the British Army during the Second World War. He has two older brothers named Geoffrey and Trevor. Stewart spent much of his childhood in a poor household in Mirfield, where he experienced domestic violence at the hands of his father. His father suffered from combat fatigue during the Dunkirk evacuation, which is now recognized as PTSD. Stewart has mentioned that his father’s strong presence influenced his work as an actor.
Stewart attended Crowlees Junior and Infant School, where he was introduced to acting by his English teacher, Cecil Dormand. He later entered Mirfield Secondary Modern School, where he continued to study drama.
