Steven John Carell was born on August 16, 1962, in Concord, Massachusetts, U.S. His father, Edwin A. Carell, was a mechanical engineer, and his mother, Harriet Theresa, was a psychiatric nurse. Carell’s family background includes Italian and German descent from his father and Polish ancestry from his mother. He was raised Catholic and attended several schools, including Nashoba Brooks School, The Fenn School, and Middlesex School. During his high school years, he played ice hockey and lacrosse, and he developed an interest in history through reenactments.
Carell earned a degree in history from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1984.
