Trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before being cast in Amistad, he has built a career across theatre, film, and television. He won a BAFTA for Best Actor for his portrayal of Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave and also received an Academy Award nomination, two Primetime Emmy nominations, and five Golden Globe nominations.
