Born Frank Wilton Marshall on September 13, 1946, in Glendale, California, he is the son of musician Jack Marshall. He graduated from UCLA in 1968 with a degree in political science. At UCLA, Marshall was active in collegiate soccer and the arts, including music and drama. His film career began after meeting filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich, an encounter sparked by a chance invitation from his parents.
