Guillermo del Toro is developing a new film titled Fury, marking another collaboration with Oscar Isaac following their work together on Frankenstein. The announcement came during del Toro’s appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he described the project as a harsh and violent thriller.
Exploring Violence and Regret in Fury
The filmmaker revealed that Fury will revisit the intense thriller style seen in his 2021 movie Nightmare Alley, emphasizing cruelty and brutality. Del Toro said,
“I’m writing a project to do with Oscar,”
and added,
“I’m writing it right now, and it’s called Fury, and essentially it’s going back to [the] sort of thriller aspects of Nightmare Alley – very cruel, very violent. Like My Dinner with Andre but [with] killing people after each course.”
He further elaborated on the themes driving the new film, highlighting his ongoing interest in the different forms of violence humans inflict on one another.
“I’m very interested in the violence we do to each other, and we do it with our minds, we do it with our souls and we do it physically,”
del Toro said. Reflecting on his own personal growth, he noted,
“I’m 60 now, so I’ve gone from asking where I’m going and [being a] father and son to [experiencing] regret. I’m in the regret decade, so expect a lot of regret.”
Context of Del Toro’s Recent Work and Frankenstein Release
Fury follows del Toro’s recently produced adaptation of Frankenstein, which stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature. The cast also features Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson. Frankenstein is scheduled for theatrical release on October 17, with a Netflix debut planned for November 7.
Both Isaac and Elordi have expressed their preference for audiences to experience the film in theaters, emphasizing the value of a shared viewing environment despite the Netflix distribution. The Frankenstein project showcases del Toro’s continued interest in complex character studies intertwined with dark, atmospheric storytelling.
Implications and What to Expect Next
The announcement of Fury signals another intense, psychologically rich collaboration between del Toro and Isaac. Given the filmmaker’s description, audiences can anticipate a brutal exploration of human nature, violence, and emotional reckoning. Fury’s development also reflects del Toro’s evolving artistic focus in his 60s, suggesting deeply personal themes embedded within the thriller genre.
As Fury progresses, it will further establish the creative partnership between one of today’s most visionary directors and a versatile leading actor. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Frankenstein’s imminent release as a precursor to del Toro’s upcoming cinematic endeavors.
