Channing Tatum has confirmed his return as Gambit in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, revealing to Variety that Ryan Reynolds has yet to appear on set. The comment reflects Reynolds’ own recent remarks, in which he humorously dodged questions about his participation in the movie. Tatum teased that the scale of Avengers: Doomsday is extraordinary and will astonish audiences.
Adjusting Gambit’s Accent for the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Recently, Tatum shared that he is moderating Gambit’s distinctive Cajun accent as the character shifts from the tone of Deadpool & Wolverine into the Marvel Cinematic Universe environment of Avengers: Doomsday. In previous films, Gambit’s accent was deliberately thick, becoming a comedic point, with Deadpool mockingly asking,
“Who’s your dialect coach? The Minions?”
Explaining the change, Tatum said,
“I’m not gonna go full Cajun. [Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full ‘Deadpool.’ They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter,”
emphasizing a more serious tone for the character.
The Purpose Behind Gambit’s Thick Accent in Deadpool
Tatum also clarified that Gambit’s heavy Cajun accent in Deadpool & Wolverine was purposely hard to understand. Speaking with Access Hollywood, he noted his personal connection, adding,
“There was very little improv. The Cajun dialect is a very particular one. I grew up in Mississippi and my dad is from New Orleans,”
then continued,
“So it’s one of those things that I grew up around it, but I’ve never done it. There are certain little isms that are very Cajun-y, but we actually intended it to be somewhat unintelligible. That was sort of the joke.”
He mentioned that Reynolds contributed to this gag during filming:
“[Ryan would] come up to me and say, ‘I don’t want to know anything that you’re saying on this [take],’ so I just dialed it all the way up. And then other ones he’s like, ‘All right, I’ve got to understand what you’re saying now,’”
highlighting the playful dynamic on set.
