Shia LaBeouf Nearly Fought Jon Voight Before Megalopolis Role

Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight, cast together in Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious film Megalopolis, almost engaged in a fistfight due to sharp political differences. This tense background and their eventual reconciliation are explored in an upcoming documentary titled Megadoc, which reveals behind-the-scenes moments from the extensive project. LaBeouf shared his account of the near-altercation in the documentary, highlighting the strain in their relationship.

LaBeouf’s Reflection on Conflict and Making Amends

The dynamic between LaBeouf and Voight was troubled and complex before Megalopolis production began. LaBeouf described how their opposing political views caused a serious rift, requiring him to seek forgiveness before working alongside Voight again. The documentary, set for release on September 19, 2025, features LaBeouf opening up about his personal struggles at that time, including accusations made against him by his then-girlfriend, FKA twigs, which were later dropped.

“I had basically f—ed my whole life up,”

LaBeouf said in the documentary.

“So I was in the midst of doing this ninth step in this program I’m in, and I had to go make amends to Voight,”

he added, describing efforts to resolve their differences.

Political Divisions and the Mentor-Foe Relationship

LaBeouf explained that Voight’s conservative political stance was at odds with his own views, which fueled their conflict. Despite this, LaBeouf acknowledged Voight’s previous role as a mentor figure in his life, making their fallout even more significant. The actor recounted a particularly intense disagreement over the phone:

“I had a big fight on the phone, where I told him I was going to come to his house and we’re going to fistfight. And I hung up the phone and didn’t talk to him for years.”

This confrontation marked a low point, but their eventual reconciliation played a crucial part in the creative process for Megalopolis, with Voight helping LaBeouf secure his role in the film.

Megalopolis’ Mixed Reception and Megadoc’s Insight

While Megalopolis did not achieve widespread critical acclaim, the film remains notable for its ambitious scope and vision, characteristic of Coppola’s filmmaking style. Megadoc aims to offer a deeper understanding of both the film’s production challenges and the personal stories of those involved, like LaBeouf and Voight. For audiences intrigued by the complexities behind the camera, this documentary will provide valuable context and perspective on this epic undertaking.
