Joe Keery Officiates Wedding Dressed as Stranger Things’ Steve

Actor Joe Keery, widely recognized for his role as Steve Harrington in the hit series Stranger Things, recently officiated a friend’s wedding in full character attire. This memorable event took place amid the lead-up to the show’s fifth and final season, with Volume 1 set to premiere on November 26 and Volume 2 on December 25, creating excitement among fans anticipating the conclusion.

Joe Keery Brings Steve Harrington to Life at a Friend’s Wedding

In a video circulating on Twitter, Joe Keery can be seen dressed as Steve Harrington from Season 3 of Stranger Things. Standing before the joyful couple, Veronica Capaldi and Matt Williams—close friends of Keery’s—he performed the wedding ceremony. The actor’s choice to officiate in full costume sparked laughter and delight among the attendees.

Keery’s humorous and spontaneous officiating included the words,

“And by the power invested in me, by the state of California, yesterday,”

followed by,

“I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

This impromptu decision to wear the iconic Steve outfit during the ceremony added an entertaining twist to the event, showcasing Keery’s playful nature and connection to the character.

Joe Keery Reflects on Stranger Things Finale and Personal Growth

Since filming Stranger Things began in November 2015, the cast has grown significantly both on-screen and off. Keery expressed satisfaction with how his character’s story concluded after ten years of dedication. In an interview with The Independent, he described the filming process as intense, saying,

“It was a long shoot, lots of work, lots of waiting, lots of action stuff, and a lot of endings… But it ended perfectly for me. I was extremely satisfied.”

Balancing his acting career, Keery also focuses on his musical projects, especially after gaining unexpected attention on TikTok. His artist persona, Djo, has been active for six years, but viral success came in early 2024 with the track “End of Beginning.” Keery designed Djo as a way to separate himself from his Stranger Things character, explaining,

“I didn’t really want to capitalize on my name as an actor, and I wanted to dissociate Steve from Stranger Things from the music.”

Initially, Djo was a form of disguise, with Keery performing while wearing a shaggy wig and sunglasses. However, his latest work under the album The Crux marks a turning point. Describing this shift, he said,

“The purpose of The Crux was to be as authentically open and ‘me’ as I could be. And it felt like it was maybe a little counterproductive to have the wig going on simultaneously. It served its purpose, and now it’s time for something new.”

Balancing Public Persona and Creative Authenticity

Recently, Keery has appeared to strike a balance between embracing the authenticity behind his music career and paying homage to his television role. Officiating the wedding dressed as Steve Harrington provides a glimpse into how Keery celebrates this iconic character while continuing to evolve as an artist and individual.

This blend of past and present highlights his journey from Stranger Things star to multifaceted performer, as he tours in support of The Crux and navigates the closing chapter of the beloved series. The intertwining of his public and personal lives demonstrates the complex identity Keery embodies as both himself and the characters he portrays.
