Netflix Reveals Jacob Elordi’s Shocking Look in del Toro’s Frankenstein

Netflix has unveiled the striking appearance of Jacob Elordi as The Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s much-anticipated Frankenstein adaptation. The film is currently screening in select theaters ahead of its official Netflix release on November 7, providing audiences with a rare, early encounter with del Toro’s dark and intricate vision of Mary Shelley’s legendary tale.

A New Vision for The Creature Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Original Concept

Previous glimpses of The Creature were limited to shadowy trailer shots and behind-the-scenes clips, but this newly released image presents the first clear portrayal of Elordi’s full character design. Notably, del Toro steps away from the traditional towering, square-headed Frankenstein’s monster popularized by Boris Karloff’s iconic portrayal. Instead, this version more closely reflects the original descriptions found in Shelley’s novel.

Mike Hill, the prosthetics artist behind the look, explained their approach in a recent Variety interview, emphasizing the idea of exposing the inner anatomy outwardly. He noted,

“What we were trying to do was almost put the inside of a human body up on the outside for all to see. That’s why the veins are shown as clear as they are.”

Hill further described the details of the design, highlighting the imperfections from Victor Frankenstein’s experimental assembly of the body:

“You see the patterns where Victor’s taken this apart and put it back on and decided that’s wrong. So he’s making a man for the first time, so he’s not getting entirely correct on the first go. There are a few patchworks, a few mistakes, and this is what this body’s showing. We created this body.”

The process reflects a painstaking effort to show Victor’s trial and error version of a human being, rather than a perfect creation.

Crafting a Body Through Careful Selection and Reconstruction

Mike Hill continued to elaborate on the body’s assembly, describing how Victor Frankenstein meticulously builds a taller-than-average man by replacing damaged parts rather than combining many bodies indiscriminately. He said:

“So you can literally see him bolting the leg together and extending this man to make him taller than an average human. What we decided is, if you were going to create a man, you wouldn’t go and get 10 bodies and someone together, what’s the point?”

— Mike Hill, Prosthetics Artist

“You’d get the very best body you can get. And then say, ‘Okay, his hand is damaged in the war, so we have to replace the hand, his foot’s damaged. We have to replace it.’”

— Mike Hill, Prosthetics Artist

This approach highlights the film’s emphasis on physical storytelling, presenting Frankenstein’s creation in a way that reflects both scientific ambition and tragic imperfection.

Guillermo del Toro’s Intimate Connection to the Frankenstein Mythos

Guillermo del Toro is known for blending empathy with horror, and his take on Frankenstein centers on Victor Frankenstein, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, a brilliant but obsessive scientist. His journey to animate life from death becomes a personal tragedy for both himself and the creature he creates.

Del Toro has described this story as deeply personal, tracing his fascination back to childhood. He said:

“This film concludes a quest that started at age 7, when I saw James Whale’s Frankenstein films for the first time. I felt the jolt of recognition in that seminal moment: Gothic horror became my church, and Boris Karloff my Messiah.”
