Succession’s Fisher Stevens Moves Family to England Amid U.S. Exit

Fisher Stevens, known for his role as Hugo Baker on HBO’s Succession, has relocated his family from the United States to England, marking a significant change in their lives. The actor revealed on October 24 that he and his wife, Alexis Bloom, along with their two children aged 12 and 9, moved to London about eight weeks earlier to experience life outside the U.S., particularly in Europe and the U.K.

Adjusting to Life in the U.K. and Family Ties

Since the move, Stevens described the adjustment as positive for his family. He noted that both he and his wife are documentary filmmakers working on several projects, and being close to Bloom’s parents in London has been a beneficial support system. This relocation reflects not only a lifestyle change but also a professional and familial realignment for Stevens and his family.

Environmental Concerns Influence the Relocation Decision

The motivation behind Stevens’ move appears partly linked to environmental and political frustrations in the U.S. The actor is involved as a producer in the environmental documentary We Are Guardians. He referenced his previous work on Before the Flood with Leonardo DiCaprio, highlighting ongoing issues with major corporations like Cargill failing to improve sustainable farming practices in the Amazon over the past decade.

Stevens stressed the urgency of continued environmental advocacy, saying,

“It’s more important than ever to keep shining a light on these stories,”

alluding to the documentary’s focus on deforestation and its community impacts in Brazil.

He also criticized political leadership in the U.S., emphasizing the role of fossil fuel interests within the current administration. He said,

“Knowing that the Trump administration is very heavily funded by the fossil fuels … I mean, the Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright is a former oil executive who refuses to [make change]. He says, ‘Oh yeah, the climate is changing…’ But this administration is doing everything it can to not be responsible citizens for the world,”

explaining his unease with the political environment.

Celebrity Exodus from the United States Amid Political Climate

Stevens is part of a wider trend among celebrities moving abroad due to discontent with the U.S. political atmosphere, especially under the Trump administration. High-profile figures like Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres have also relocated to Europe as a response to these circumstances.

O’Donnell shared via TikTok that she is currently pursuing Irish citizenship through her grandparents and explained,

“And that’s what’s going on, and that’s where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing. And although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are.”

DeGeneres described her move to England with wife Portia de Rossi similarly, recounting to broadcaster Richard Bacon,

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

Adjusting to the English Countryside Away from Hollywood

DeGeneres expressed appreciation for the lifestyle differences in England, highlighting its charm and tranquility compared to the chaos of Hollywood. She said,

“We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life,”

adding,

“It’s clean. Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

Other Celebrities Moving Abroad Citing Lifestyle and Political Changes

Eva Longoria has also transitioned between the U.S. and Spain recently. In a November 2024 interview with Marie Claire, she attributed her move not solely to politics but to broader lifestyle changes, saying,

“The vibe was different,

and that

“Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes — not that I want to s*** on California — it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”

Significance of Fisher Stevens’ Move and Broader Implications

Fisher Stevens’ relocation to London signals a growing unease among Americans, particularly celebrities, with the current U.S. political and environmental climate. His move, driven by family considerations, work opportunities, and political disenchantment, echoes a larger pattern of figures seeking stability and a different quality of life abroad. As environmental issues intensify and political divisions deepen, such departures could impact cultural connections and industry dynamics in the U.S. Conversely, they may also promote closer transatlantic collaborations and spotlight global concerns through creative projects.
With Stevens and others establishing roots abroad, it remains to be seen how this will influence their work, public engagement, and potential future movements across borders.
