Lacey Chabert Opens Up on Love for Iconic Mean Girls Role

Lacey Chabert, known for her work on the Hallmark Channel, remains deeply connected to her character Gretchen Wieners from the 2004 film Mean Girls. Even after more than two decades, she continues to cherish the role, highlighting the lasting impact the film has had on its fans. Speaking on Live With Kelly and Mark on November 3, Chabert expressed amazement at how the movie’s popularity has persisted into 2023, underscoring her ongoing affection for Gretchen Wieners.

Chabert explained the unique experience of filming the movie, emphasizing the camaraderie among the cast.

“It really bonds you when you’re a part of something that ends up beloved by people,”

she stated. She recalled the feeling during production:

“When you’re in something, you don’t know how it’s going to be received. I just remember the feeling, though, that every day we were making each other laugh. And it just felt right, and I was like, ‘I think this is going to turn out pretty good.’”

Reunions and Revisiting the ‘Plastics’ Legacy

In 2020, the original Mean Girls cast reunited virtually for a Zoom event hosted by Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Lacey Chabert joined co-stars including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Jonathan Bennett for a lively discussion about the film, during which they recreated their memorable four-way phone call scene. This event highlighted the ongoing cultural resonance of the movie and its characters.

Subsequently, Lacey, Lindsay, and Amanda teamed up again in a series of Walmart commercials that offered fans a fresh take on their roles. In these ads, Gretchen has become a mother, still eager to make “fetch” happen, while her daughter embodies the new Regina George. Karen, played by Amanda Seyfried, works as a weather reporter, and Cady, portrayed by Lindsay Lohan, serves as a school guidance counselor. Gretchen also continues to lean on the memory of her father, known as

“the inventor of the toaster strudel,”

to influence situations in her favor.

Thoughts on a Possible Mean Girls Reboot

Lacey Chabert has openly expressed enthusiasm for a potential reboot of the Mean Girls franchise, stating she would welcome the opportunity to return to the world that made her character iconic. Although a Broadway musical adaptation was made into a film in 2024 featuring an entirely new cast, discussions about continuing the story with the original actors have been limited. Fans and the cast alike remain hopeful that the enduring affection for the story and characters could lead to future projects involving the original ensemble.
