Florence Pugh has decided to stop discussing her personal relationships publicly, pointing to the negative reactions she faced during her previous relationship with actor Zach Braff. The 29-year-old Thunderbolts star shared her reasons for this choice in a recent interview, highlighting the intense backlash sparked mainly by the age difference between her and Zach Braff, who is 50.
Responding to Harsh Judgement Over Age Gap
During her conversation on the Louis Theroux Podcast, Florence expressed frustration with how people react to her romantic life. She said,
“With relationships and with romance in this world, it doesn’t matter how much you speak on it or how little you speak on it, people don’t care. They want a story,”
Florence told the Louis Theroux Podcast.
She explained that the public craves drama, adding,
“They sort of want a reality show, and so it doesn’t really matter how much you say you love someone or how much they make you happy, if they don’t like them and it doesn’t fit that image that they want of you, they don’t care.”
This disconnect between perception and reality contributed to a flood of criticism aimed at their relationship.
The Impact of Online Abuse on Florence and Zach
Florence described the intense abuse she faced because of the age difference in her relationship, calling it an
“insane amount of abuse being hurled at my relationship just because there was an age gap.”
She made it clear that while she fiercely defends those she loves, the unfair scrutiny and personal attacks took a serious emotional toll.
“I’ll always defend people that I love, I will always stand up for them. If there needs to be a reset and a bit of a smack on the wrist, I will do that because it’s not fair that so much of your life gets to have jabs,”
she stated.
Turning Off Instagram Comments Amid Toxic Reactions
Looking back to April 2020, Florence recalled a moment when the online hostility became unbearable. She shared,
“Within about eight minutes of the photo being posted, I had about 70 percent of the comments hurling abuse and being horrid, basically bullying someone on my page. It is the first time in my entire Instagram life that I’ve had to turn off the comments on my page. I’ve never been an Instagram page that encourages that. I’ve never been an Instagram page that likes that toxic vibe.”
She expressed how painful it was to witness the person she cared about endure relentless negativity:
“It got to the point where it was just really horrible to see someone that you are with receiving that, and it was never at me, it was only at him. And I think I just needed to kind of just check everyone, and so I made a video and it got a lot of love and lots of people were supportive, which was great. I do think people online need to be reminded that we’re real.”
Zach Braff’s Decision to Stay Silent on Criticism
Zach Braff has chosen not to publicly respond to the backlash, choosing a more reserved approach. While Florence has openly defended their relationship, Zach’s decision to remain quiet illustrates the different ways people cope with public scrutiny in the spotlight.

Why Florence Pugh’s Approach Matters Moving Forward
Florence Pugh’s experience with relentless judgment over her relationship reveals the harsh realities public figures face when their personal lives are put under a microscope. Her choice to remain silent aims to protect her emotional wellbeing and those she cares about, signaling a shift toward preserving privacy in an environment prone to online cruelty. As fans and observers continue to watch her career and personal choices, her stance might encourage a broader conversation about respect and compassion in public discourse about celebrity relationships.
