“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery”
captured attention at the BFI London Film Festival, Rian Johnson reflected on his journey with the Rian Johnson Knives Out series and his vision for its future. The celebrated director made it clear that, while excitement for Knives Out 4 is high, he is choosing a patient approach before considering another installment.
Wake Up Dead Man Marks a New Chapter
At the London festival, Johnson premiered “Wake Up Dead Man,” calling it his most personal film yet. This latest entry reunites Daniel Craig as the renowned detective Benoit Blanc alongside a star-studded cast, featuring Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, and Daryl McCormack. The movie, set to launch on Netflix after its limited cinema release, dives into faith and religion, a theme inspired by Johnson’s own upbringing.
No Immediate Plans for the Next Installment
When asked about what comes next for the Knives Out franchise, Johnson candidly admitted that he does not have a solid plan in place for a fourth film.
“I got nothing. If you have anything, I’ll take it. I think it’s good to totally empty the well and then start from scratch on the next one.”
— Rian Johnson, Director.
Johnson further emphasized that the continuation of the series will depend on several factors, highlighting creativity and teamwork with Craig as essential.
“As long as Daniel and I have fun doing it, and he wants to do them, as long as audiences like them, and also as long as we can keep challenging ourselves and coming up with something that’s genuinely new.”
— Rian Johnson, Director.
