Ryan Coogler Shares Original Black Panther Sequel Story

The director Ryan Coogler has disclosed the initial vision for the highly anticipated sequel, offering new details about what the Ryan Coogler Black Panther sequel would have been before Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing. In a recent interview, Coogler shed light on the original story’s focus and how circumstances led to dramatic changes for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Early Plans for the Sequel Focused on T’Challa’s Fatherhood

Before Chadwick Boseman’s death, Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios were developing a very different follow-up to the first Black Panther movie. This initial screenplay was meant to continue T’Challa’s journey, with Boseman expected to reprise his leading role. The film’s early draft was shaped by the relationship between T’Challa and his son, exploring themes of legacy, fatherhood, and coming of age.

During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler shared details of this plan. The story centered on a Wakandan ritual for princes called the ‘Ritual of Eight’, a significant plot device crafted by Coogler to highlight the bond between T’Challa and his child.

“It was like a 180-page draft chock-full of them. The big thing about the script was this thing called the ‘Ritual of Eight,’ where when a prince is eight years old, he has to go spend eight days in the bush with his father and amongst them, and amongst those eight days, they have to go into the bush without any tools. The prince has to listen to everything that’s asked of him by his father. But the rule is that for those eight days, the prince can ask the father any question, and the father has to answer.”

The Central Conflict Involving Namor and Tradition

In this early vision for the Ryan Coogler Black Panther sequel, drama would erupt during the sacred eight-day ritual. Namor, a powerful new rival introduced in the final film, would attack Wakanda at a vulnerable moment. This forced T’Challa to remain at his son’s side due to the unbreakable tradition, adding intense stakes to both familial and national crises.

“During the course of those eight days, Namor launches an attack. He had to deal with somebody who was like insanely dangerous, but because of this ritual, his son had to be like joined at his hip the whole time.”

The tension was designed to push T’Challa into negotiating and fighting while obeying the custom that he not leave his son, shaping the film’s action and emotional beats.

“He was engaging in negotiations, fights, and his son had to be right there, or he’d have to violate this ritual, which had never been broken. That was what the movie was. [With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever], I got a chance to make a movie about women. I love that movie so much.”

How the Film Changed After Boseman’s Passing

The death of Chadwick Boseman led to a complete rethinking of the sequel’s direction. The version that audiences eventually saw in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever became an exploration of grief, both in the Wakandan world and among the cast and crew. The story instead focused on the female characters of Wakanda, shifting away from the father-son motif of the original draft.

Though fans are intrigued by Coogler’s original story, many recognize that the film released was deeply influenced by real-life loss, resulting in a narrative that honored both T’Challa and Chadwick Boseman’s impact. The director’s remarks suggest that the original concept, particularly the ‘Ritual of Eight’ and its emotional arc, might one day be explored in another medium such as comics.
