Paul Giamatti Shakes Up Starfleet Academy in New Role

Paul Giamatti joins the Star Trek universe in a pivotal new part, bringing energy and charisma to his Paul Giamatti Starfleet Academy role. The highly anticipated series premieres with two episodes on January 15 on Paramount+, set in the distant future at the renowned academy as a new generation of cadets face galactic challenges under the guidance of seasoned leaders.

The show marks an expansion of CBS’s Star Trek universe, with Alex Kurtzman as executive producer and Emmy winners Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti heading a compelling cast. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows hopeful officers through personal trials and intergalactic threats, all while striving to restore the Federation’s ideals after a century-long hiatus in academy admissions.

A Look Inside the Starfleet Academy Experience

Set in the 32nd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy focuses on a fresh class of cadets—the first to enroll at the academy in more than a century. This historic return highlights a new era for the Federation and its ideals. Cadets must learn to work together, forging friendships, confronting rivalries, and experiencing first love, all under the strict supervision of their instructors.

“Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself,”

the official synopsis teases.

The series is steered by Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunner Noga Landau, who note that these rookie cadets have

“a lot riding on their shoulders, and they are meant to reestablish and rebuild everything that we all know and love about Star Trek.”

“They convey hope and they search for hope, and that felt like an extremely relevant message to talk about now,”

Kurtzman adds.

Landau describes the show as a blend of wish-fulfillment and timeless coming-of-age tales, reimagined for the Star Trek universe.

“One week that can be a prank, war erupts another week, a romance begins another week, we encounter an alien species for the first time and we don’t know what the hell we’re doing [another week],”

she says.

“But at the end of every episode, what we want our audience to feel is, ‘I want to go to Starfleet Academy,’”

she continues.

“Even in the deepest, darkest depths of character problems and drama, you get such a good feeling from watching this show [of] how much you want to be there so badly.”

Teasing the Academy: Highlights from the Official Trailer

The official trailer launched during New York Comic Con on October 11, 2025, giving audiences a dynamic preview of the new drama. It primarily follows the diverse experiences of cadets as they take on challenging drills, build relationships, and seek answers in their personal lives.

One standout cadet is Caleb Mir, portrayed by Sandro Rosta. As an orphan, Mir hopes that attending the academy will help him locate his long-lost mother. Beyond Caleb, viewers also meet Sam, played by Kerrice Brooks, a character who confesses to often feeling “invisible, but mostly awkward,” after an introduction from Jett Reno, Tig Notaro’s returning Star Trek: Discovery character.

“Being a cadet in Starfleet Academy means being open to the people around you,”

says Tig Notaro’s Jett Reno, providing insight into the emotional dynamics awaiting viewers.

Between immersive battle training, hints of romance, and appearances from both Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti, the trailer promises that new faces and legacy characters alike will engage both longtime fans and those new to Starfleet lore.

The Star-Studded Cast Shaping the Academy

Heading up the Starfleet Academy is Holly Hunter, portraying Chancellor Nahla Ake, the academy’s leader who plays an essential role in guiding cadets and setting the tone for the series.

“You’re sort of talking about ‘the cool mom,’”

Kurtzman told EW of the character.

“It’s a very specific voice that you need. She has to have the authority of the captain, but also she needs to be the head of a school and be nurturing in that way, but also be tough. She really is in her own category as a captain.”

A new crop of hopeful officers includes Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Zoë Steiner, and Bella Shepard, each embodying the next generation of the Federation. Rosta’s Caleb Mir character stands out by serving as an initial lens into academy life for viewers, guiding perspectives through the series’ early chapters.

“Once the cadet enters into the school and meets all the other cadets, the balance of the storytelling begins to shift slightly,”

Kurtzman explains.

“By the end of the season, you really feel like you have this incredible understanding of everybody and how they function as a group.”

Recurring guests bring more star power—Tatiana Maslany (known for Orphan Black and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and comedian Gina Yashere (Bob Hearts Abishola)—while returning Star Trek: Discovery actors include Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance, and Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly.

Fans of the wider franchise have another treat: Robert Picardo reprises his beloved role as the Doctor, returning from Voyager and Prodigy. Landau promises that Starfleet will

“continue his story forward in a way that fans of Voyager are going to find really satisfying.”

Paul Giamatti Brings a Powerful New Antagonist

Paul Giamatti, who has garnered two Oscar nominations and is a passionate Star Trek enthusiast, takes on the role of Nus Braka—the main adversary of the season. His transformation required substantial preparation and dedication.

Giamatti

“had such a great time putting on the makeup,”

according to Kurtzman.

“He loved sitting in the chair. We were worried it was going to take too much time, but he said, ‘No, I love it. It really lets me drop into the character.’”

Kurtzman likens Giamatti’s antagonist to

“a tide that has swept across the world in a very profound and upsetting way,”

promising dramatic stakes and a formidable presence to shape the academy’s fate. The season also introduces Klingon hybrid species, one of whom is counted among the core characters. As teased by the showrunners, classic elements of the franchise are integrated in fresh, imaginative ways.

Among other compelling faces in the series are Gina Yashere, Tatiana Maslany, and cameo appearances from long-running favorites.
