Tatiana Gabriele Maslany (born September 22, 1985) is a Canadian actress recognized for her extraordinary range across film, television, and stage. She first gained international attention for playing multiple cloned characters in the science-fiction thriller series Orphan Black (2013–2017), a performance that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2016. Maslany is the first Canadian to win an Emmy in a major dramatic category for acting in a Canadian series, and her body of work spans independent dramas, blockbuster superhero productions, and Broadway theatre.

Early Life and Background

Tatiana Gabriele Maslany was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Daniel Maslany, a woodworker, and Renate Maslany, a French–English translator and interpreter. She has two younger brothers, Daniel and Michael Maslany, both involved in creative fields. Her family heritage includes Austrian, German, Polish, Romanian, and Ukrainian ancestry, and she was raised partly in French immersion while being taught German by her mother.

Maslany began dancing at the age of four and started community theatre and musicals when she was nine. She has spoken about her early exposure to the stage as a defining influence on her artistic development. Her multilingual upbringing and cultural background later informed her ability to take on diverse and complex roles across international productions.

Path to Acting

Maslany attended Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School in Regina, where she took part in school productions and improvisation, graduating in 2003. While still a student, she balanced paid acting work that took her across Canada with her parents’ support, returning to school after short periods on set. After high school, she took a gap year and briefly enrolled at the University of Regina, where she studied German, Ancient Greek, Philosophy, Psychology, and Film before dropping out after half a semester.

She then spent time doing theatre performances and travelling, eventually settling in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 20. Maslany also performed comedic improvisation for ten years, participated in the Canadian Improv Games, and became a member of the General Fools Improvisational Theatre. Early Career (2002–2012)

Maslany was one of the stars of the 2002 Canadian television series 2030 CE and appeared as the character Ghost in the 2004 film Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. In 2007, she appeared in The Messengers and began a recurring role that lasted three seasons on the CBC series Heartland. During 2008, she had a recurring role on Instant Star, provided a voice role in Eastern Promises, and had a lead role in the Hallmark Channel film An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving.

Her role in Grown Up Movie Star earned Maslany a special jury breakout role award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In 2010, she also portrayed Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the British television series The Nativity. From 2013 to 2017, Maslany starred in Orphan Black, the BBC America and Space original series where she played the lead character Sarah Manning and Sarah’s cohort of clones. Her performance was widely praised, with The Guardian calling it Olympic-level acting for her ability to portray multiple clones interacting seamlessly. She won two Critics’ Choice Television Awards and a Television Critics Association Award for the role, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

In 2015, Maslany received her first Emmy nomination for Orphan Black, and in 2016 she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In 2022, Maslany married actor Brendan Hines. She has lived in Los Angeles since 2017. In June 2024, she was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, an occasion on which she publicly criticized the Saskatchewan government’s school pronoun law, donated $10,000 to a Regina transitional home for LGBTQ youth, and called for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
