James Gunn has verified that the forthcoming Mister Miracle animated series will be officially integrated into the DC Universe (DCU). This announcement came ahead of the show’s anticipated release in June 2025, shortly before the debut of Superman, with HBO having ordered the adaptation of the acclaimed Mister Miracle comic by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. Fans had been uncertain whether this series would exist within the broader DCU, as with Creature Commandos, or if it would follow the path of standalone projects like My Adventures with Green Lantern.
The Significance of Mister Miracle’s Inclusion in the DCU
Mister Miracle, a character created by Jack Kirby, first appeared in his own series in 1971. Known as Scott Free, he is the adopted son of the villain Darkseid and escaped a grim existence on the planet Apokolips. After fleeing to Earth, Scott Free became a master escape artist. His story is closely tied with Big Barda, a former member of Darkseid’s Female Furies who defects after falling in love with him. The comic series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, released between 2016 and 2017 as a twelve-issue limited run, received widespread acclaim and won the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series in 2019. King is attached as the showrunner for the animated series, while Gerads is involved in the animation process.
With the Mister Miracle series confirmed as DCU canon, it joins a growing lineup of projects such as Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, Creature Commandos Season 2, Booster Gold, The Brave and the Bold, and an upcoming Wonder Woman reboot. This diverse slate highlights DCU’s intent to explore many different facets of its universe. Although no release date has been officially announced for Mister Miracle, production is underway, and casting has reportedly started. Similar to Creature Commandos, voice actors cast for Mister Miracle could appear in upcoming live-action adaptations as well.
What Mister Miracle Means for Darkseid’s Role in the DCU
Making Mister Miracle part of the DCU also brings back Darkseid, a character James Gunn previously excluded from being the DCU’s main antagonist following Zack Snyder’s earlier use of the villain. Darkseid holds an important position among the New Gods, a key element in the storyline of Mister Miracle’s comic source material. Although Gunn hinted at the Salvation Run narrative in Peacemaker Season 2, which ties into Darkseid in the comics, he has clarified there are no direct connections planned between that and the larger DCU at this point.
The presence of Darkseid in Mister Miracle suggests a shift in how the DCU will handle the character—not as the central threat to the entire universe, but more as a focused adversary specifically for Mister Miracle himself. This could allow the series and the wider DCU to explore fresh interpretations and interactions with this iconic villain, potentially refreshing his role within the franchise.
