Zachary Edward Snyder (born March 1, 1966) is an American filmmaker recognized for directing visually ambitious comic book adaptations, superhero films, and large-scale action productions. He is the founder of The Stone Quarry, a production company he runs alongside his wife Deborah Snyder and producing partner Wesley Coller. Across more than three decades of work, Snyder has built a reputation as one of the most discussed directors in modern Hollywood.
After starting his career primarily directing music videos, Snyder made his feature film debut in 2004 with a remake of Dawn of the Dead. Zachary Edward Snyder was born on March 1, 1966, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and grew up in Riverside, Connecticut, and later Greenwich, Connecticut. His mother, Marsha Manley, was a painter and photography teacher who nurtured his artistic side and bought him his first film camera as a child. His father, Charles Edward Snyder, worked as an executive recruiter. Snyder has an older sister, Audrey, and an older brother, Sam, who died in a car accident when Snyder was a teenager.

In 2009, Snyder listed Excalibur, Mad Max 2, A Clockwork Orange, Blue Velvet, and RoboCop as his five favorite films. Politically, Snyder has described himself as a Democrat, endorsing Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and stating in a 2021 interview with The Guardian that he is a strong advocate of women’s rights and individual liberties.
Following his daughter’s death, Snyder became involved in philanthropic efforts focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness. His social media campaigns raised more than 750,000 dollars in charitable donations to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League features a billboard for the organization with the message “You are not alone.” He also directed two PSAs for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2018 and partnered with Save the Children in 2021 to build a temporary hospital facility in New Delhi to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
Upcoming Projects
As of 2025, Snyder is set to direct a new feature action film for Netflix centered around the Los Angeles Police Department, co-writing the script with frequent collaborator Kurt Johnstad. He is also developing The Last Photograph, a war photographers drama previously known as Horse Latitudes, with Stuart Martin and Fra Fee joining the cast, and Brawler, a UFC film written with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad.
Additional projects include Planet of the Dead, a sequel to Army of the Dead, and Blood and Ashes, a third film set in the world of 300, for which The Stone Quarry gained the movie rights from Warner Bros. in 2023.
