Chris Pratt’s casting as Star-Lord in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy transformed his career, elevating him from his comedic roots in Parks and Recreation to a major action star. In a recent interview, Pratt discussed how director James Gunn played a crucial role in securing his James Gunn Guardians Role and ultimately shaping the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) beloved character.
The Turning Point in Chris Pratt’s Career
Before embodying Peter Quill, Pratt was primarily known for his comedy work, but he surprised audiences by dramatically changing his image through a smaller, intense role in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The transition demonstrated his range and caught the attention of key figures, setting the stage for his casting in Marvel’s space adventure.
Playing Star-Lord has since significantly impacted Pratt’s life, making him one of Hollywood’s top action stars. During a conversation with podcast host Josh Horowitz, Pratt emphasized how instrumental James Gunn was in his rise, not only for choosing him but for backing him during challenging times.
Behind the Scenes: The Struggle to Keep James Gunn on Guardians Vol. 3
In 2018, Disney’s decision to fire James Gunn over controversial resurfaced Tweets threatened the future of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Pratt, along with much of the cast, openly opposed Disney’s move and pushed for Gunn’s reinstatement, showing how intertwined their loyalty was to the director’s vision.
Pratt recounted,
“I remember it all clearly. I talked to Louis D’Esposito at Marvel, and he said they had to let James go. I told him it was a mistake. ‘You can’t do this.’ But it happened anyway. I reached out to James and said, ‘This isn’t over.’ I started praying on it and strategising. Dave Bautista defended him publicly in his own intense way.”
He further credited the eventual reversal to Disney leadership:
“But ultimately, the credit for bringing him back goes to the people at Marvel and Alan Horn at Disney. He realised it wasn’t right,”
Pratt explained.
“Some people get cancelled and then act in ways that justify it. James was incredibly classy. He owned everything. Once things settled, it was clear it was unfair. He got the job back because firing him was a glaring mistake.”
What Sold James Gunn on Pratt as Star-Lord
Pratt also reflected on the audition process and how he convinced Gunn that he was the right actor for Star-Lord. He admitted some doubt during certain scenes, especially those requiring emotional depth opposite the Gamora character, played by Zoe Saldaña.
He shared,
“I didn’t know that I had it yet, but I was screen testing and felt pretty solid. I thought I could get this. My close friend Ben Davis was doing the Drax readings for James and gave me some inside information about what people said after my first screen test. He told me, ‘This is yours to lose. Just keep doing what you’re doing.’ But when I did the scenes with the Gamora character—the Fooled Around and Fell in Love scene—I wasn’t good. James thought I was blowing it. Then he saw me and Dave Bautista improvising together, saw that dynamic between us, and thought, okay, we can make this movie work.”
Looking Ahead: Pratt’s Future as Star-Lord and the Guardians Franchise
Pratt has been clear about his eagerness to continue portraying Star-Lord in upcoming MCU projects. Fans widely anticipate his involvement in large-scale events like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, highlighting his central role in the franchise.
However, with James Gunn now leading DC Studios, his return to the MCU appears unlikely. This change means that any future Guardians films will be directed by new filmmakers, signaling a fresh chapter in the series’ creative direction. Despite this upheaval, Pratt remains a key figure for the character and the fans who cherish Guardians of the Galaxy.
Chris Pratt’s journey from a comedic actor to a major action star tied closely to James Gunn’s vision underscores the importance of creative collaboration and loyalty within blockbuster filmmaking. Their shared story reveals the complexities behind the scenes of one of the MCU’s most popular franchises and hints at evolving dynamics as the franchise moves forward under new leadership.
