Elijah Wood, widely recognized for his role as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, joined a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The Elijah Wood Anti-ICE Protest took place at 577 Main Street as nearly one hundred demonstrators gathered to oppose recent ICE crackdowns and to honor Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were killed by ICE agents.
Elijah Wood Speaks Out Against ICE Violence
Starting his career as a child actor and having earned a Screen Actors Guild Award, Elijah Wood expressed deep concern for victims of ICE violence. Reflecting on the deaths in Minnesota, he said,
“The folks who have been unlawfully gunned down in Minnesota — it’s awful.”
Wood emphasized the unity that the Sundance Film Festival tries to promote, sharing,
“Here we are at this film festival that is about bringing people together; it’s about telling stories from all over the world. We’re not divided here; we’re coming together.”
Natalie Portman and Other Celebrities Join Anti-ICE Demonstrations
Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman also publicly condemned the government’s actions during the festival. Known for her role in Black Swan, Portman described the situation as “absolutely horrific,” stating,
“What the federal government, Trump’s government, Kristi Noem, ICE – what they’re doing is really the worst of the worst of humanity. And then we have the best of the best of humanity for the way people are showing up for each other.”
Mark Ruffalo, an actor known for his vocal opposition toward ICE and the Trump administration, reacted to the killing of Alex Pretti with a sharp condemnation:
“Cold blooded murder on an American street of a man protecting someone he loves. Don’t pretend this is okay. We have been invaded by a criminal army from within. Do not pretend this isn’t dangerous or wrong.”
Other notable figures attending or supporting the protests included Olivia Wilde, seen wearing an ICE OUT pin, along with Florence Pugh, Lisa Rinna, Walton Goggins, Barbie Ferreira, Olivia Rodrigo, Angel Reese, Amanda Gorman, Meg Stalter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jonathan Van Ness, Cynthia Nixon, and Edward Norton. Their participation highlighted widespread disapproval within Hollywood regarding ICE’s recent tactics.

The Growing Impact of Anti-ICE Activism at Sundance
The presence of prominent actors like Elijah Wood and Natalie Portman, alongside a large crowd of demonstrators, underscores the increasing friction surrounding ICE enforcement in the United States. By linking these protests with a globally recognized event such as the Sundance Film Festival, activists aim to bring more attention to the humanitarian crisis aspects of immigration raids and the loss of life caused by ICE operations. This collective action raises questions about the future role of celebrities and public figures in social justice movements tied to immigration enforcement policies.
As this protest and others continue to gain attention, it is likely that similar demonstrations will be seen at major cultural events, reflecting ongoing resistance to federal immigration practices. The voices raised at Park City represent a broader push for change that critics say is urgently needed in the current political climate.
