Natalie Portman Reveals She “Misplaced a Rib” Filming Black Swan

Natalie Portman, who won an Academy Award for her role in the 2010 film Black Swan, revealed she suffered a significant injury while preparing for the psychological thriller. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Portman explained that intense physical demands led to what she described as “misplac[ing] a rib,” which happened due to being lifted repeatedly during filming.

Intense Physical Training Behind the Scenes

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan stars Portman as Nina Sayers, a ballerina whose grip on reality unravels. The demanding role required Portman to perform numerous dance sequences with precision. Aronofsky highlighted her challenging task of combining acting with the physically exact movements needed for ballet on screen.

Mary Helen Bower, a former New York City Ballet dancer who trained Portman, emphasized the extent of the actress’s dedication.

“The idea is, if you’re going to play a ballerina, you’re going to have to train like one,”

Bower explained, praising Portman’s commitment during their rigorous sessions.

Bower described the grueling regimen:

“We’re meeting at 5, 5:30 in the morning, doing ballet for two or three hours. She goes and works a 12-hour day and meets me at the gym at night, and we’re doing our toning exercises and swimming a mile. And then she goes home and goes to sleep and then we get up the next day and do it again. And this is six days a week for months and months and months leading up to the movie.”

Additional Career Highlights

Beyond Black Swan, Portman earned lead actress nominations for her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie (2016) and earned a supporting role nomination for Mike Nichols’s Closer (2004), where she acted alongside Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Clive Owen.

This year, the animated film Arco, for which Portman provided voice acting, received a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film, highlighting a contrast to her physically demanding live-action roles.

Enduring Impact of Natalie Portman’s Commitment

Portman’s experience on Black Swan underscores the physical intensity behind roles that require authentic portrayal of demanding professions like ballet. Her injury and rigorous training reflect a dedication that contributed not only to her Oscar-winning performance but also to setting a standard for preparation in film acting. As Portman continues to explore diverse roles, her ability to balance physical and emotional challenges remains a testament to her craft.
