Robert Eggers Wraps Werwulf Filming: Dark Werewolf Horror Nears

Robert Eggers has completed filming for his upcoming horror film Werwulf, wrapping principal photography in early January after starting in October. The Robert Eggers Werwulf film is set to be released on Christmas Day 2026, marking another dark and atmospheric entry in the director’s body of work.

A Familiar Ensemble Joins the Project

The cast of Werwulf includes several actors who have previously collaborated with Eggers. Ralph Ineson confirmed his role by sharing behind-the-scenes photos, joining Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, all of whom have appeared in Eggers’ earlier films. Newcomer Bodhi Rae Breathnach, who made her debut in Hamnet, also stars in the movie. The screenplay is a joint effort between Eggers and Icelandic writer Sjón, known for their work on the Viking epic The Northman. Both Eggers and Sjón are producers alongside Focus Features, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus acting as executive producers.

Setting and Storyline Rooted in Medieval England

Werwulf is set in 13th century England, reflecting Eggers’ fascination with historical authenticity. The dialogue employs language inspired by the period, accompanied by subtitles and notes for viewers unfamiliar with Old English. The plot centers on villagers who encounter legends of a werewolf lurking in their fog-covered countryside, with the supernatural horror becoming an ominous reality. Eggers has described this project as the darkest story he has ever crafted, promising a grim and atmospheric journey.

While Eggers initially planned to shoot the film in black and white, he later opted for a muted color palette combined with stark lighting to capture the bleak medieval ambiance.

Anticipated Impact and Audience Expectations

Fans can expect the meticulous attention to detail and immersive storytelling that defined Eggers’ previous successes like The Witch and The Lighthouse. Werwulf aims to deliver a chilling medieval werewolf narrative with the same unsettling tone that audiences admire. The film also aspires to replicate the box office success of Eggers’ earlier collaboration with Willem Dafoe on Nosferatu, which grossed nearly $182 million worldwide. With a talented ensemble, authentic period dialogue, and a deeply dark atmosphere, Werwulf is positioned to be a standout horror release in 2026.
