Matt Damon, known for his impressive career choices in Hollywood, started strong by co-writing and starring in the critically acclaimed Good Will Hunting with Ben Affleck. His early success earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and set a promising course for his career. Despite this solid foundation, Damon has openly expressed regret over missing out on a major role in James Cameron’s Avatar, which he turned down before Sam Worthington took the lead.
Early Career Highlights and Rise to Stardom
Damon’s breakthrough came in the 1990s after Good Will Hunting, when he continued to establish himself with a standout role in Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Later, he gained considerable fame through his roles in the Ocean’s franchise and the Bourne series, which became defining projects of his career. The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy especially helped cement the character of Jason Bourne as unforgettable and built a loyal fan base by the mid-2000s.
Challenges and Frustrations with The Bourne Ultimatum
The third installment, The Bourne Ultimatum, directed by Paul Greengrass, diverged from Robert Ludlum’s original novel, and Damon expressed significant disappointment with the script’s quality. Speaking to GQ, Damon said,
“It’s really the studio’s fault for putting themselves in that position,”
reflecting on how the project became difficult.
“I don’t blame [writer] Tony [Gilroy] for taking a boatload of money and handing in what he handed in. It’s just that it was unreadable. This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay, and it would be game over for that dude. It’s terrible. It’s really embarrassing. He was having a go, basically, and he took his money and left.”
Damon also revealed the struggles during production, mentioning,

“We had a start date…Like, ‘It’s coming out August of next year.’ We’re like, ‘Hang on, we’ve got to figure out what the script is.’”
He further added a complication with credit disputes as Gilroy sought sole writing recognition, but after review, credit was shared with Scott Z. Burns and George Nolfi. Damon commented on this,
“That was just a little bit of justice, I have to say,”
but also admitted his hurt feelings, stating,
“If I didn’t respect Gilroy and appreciate his talent, then I really wouldn’t have cared. My feelings were hurt. That’s all. And that’s exactly why I shouldn’t have said anything.”
Regretting the $270 Million Avatar Opportunity
In 2019, Damon shared with GQ the story of missing out on the lead role in James Cameron’s lucrative Avatar film before Sam Worthington was cast. He regretted passing on the opportunity, acknowledging its massive financial implications. Damon recalled telling John Krasinski during a break from writing Promised Land,
“I told John Krasinski this story when we were writing Promised Land…We’re writing this movie about fracking. We’re writing in the kitchen, and we’re on a break, and I tell him the story and he goes, ‘What?’”
He continued, describing Krasinski’s reaction vividly:
“And he stands up and he starts pacing in the kitchen. He goes, ‘OK. OK. OK. OK. OK.’ He goes, ‘If you had done that movie, nothing in your life would be different. Nothing in your life would be different at all. Except that, right now, we would be having this conversation in space.’”
Finding Perspective on Career and Financial Stability
Despite this setback, Damon remains financially secure and focused on his family. He shared,
“But my kids are all eating,”
adding with reassurance, “I’m doing OK.” His view on the issue reflects an acceptance of the path his career has taken, even if some decisions come with a sense of “what if.”
James Cameron’s Response to Damon’s Regrets
James Cameron addressed Damon’s regret in a 2022 interview on BBC Radio 1, offering a pragmatic perspective. The filmmaker remarked,
“He’s beating himself up over this, and I really think, Matt, you’re kind of like one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Get over it,”
while also acknowledging the practical constraints Damon faced. Cameron explained that Damon had obligations to complete another Bourne installment before committing to Avatar, which led to his decision to turn it down.
“But he had to do another Bourne film, which was on his runway, and there’s nothing he could do about that, and so he had to regretfully decline.”
The Impact of Avatar and Damon’s Career Trajectory
Since 2022, the Avatar franchise has continued its massive box office success with two more films released. Although it remains speculative whether Damon would have appeared in the sequels, it is clear that accepting the role would have been a lucrative move. Cameron’s franchise has been a money spinner and one of the most commercially successful in history.
Nonetheless, Cameron emphasized that Damon’s career shows little sign of missteps beyond declining the Avatar role. The Bourne series and various other projects have sustained and even elevated his status in Hollywood. His choices, while sometimes regretted, have not diminished the steady growth of his profile and achievements.
