Susan Lucci recently shared how she changed her mind about joining the cast of Jonah Hill’s upcoming film after initially declining the offer. The actress, widely known for her work on All My Children, was approached to play a role in Outcome, a film written and directed by Hill, but she initially refused due to a difficult and emotionally sensitive time in her life. The decision to say no was rooted in her feelings about the challenging nature of the role and her personal readiness.
The Challenge of the Role and Lucci’s Initial Concerns
Lucci described receiving the script for Outcome directly from Hill, noting that although the role was not huge, it contained a powerful scene that caught her attention. She explained,
“I was told I was receiving this script from Jonah Hill for his movie, and it’s for Apple [TV], and my name, ‘Susan Lucci,’ was watermarked.”
She found the material compelling, stating,
“It was an offer. And I read this script, and it’s not a big part, but it’s pretty sizable, the scene, and very powerful. I remember thinking, ‘This is really something. And this is challenging.’”
Despite the intriguing opportunity, Lucci hesitated because she felt she was too emotionally raw at the time.
“It was gonna require me to go to a place I thought I was still too raw to go to,”
she said, clarifying that it was not the exact source of her rawness but an emotional state she had not fully overcome. She reflected on the potential impact of taking the role, admitting,
“I thought, ‘This is probably just not good for me to do.’ ‘I don’t know… It’s good for my career to do, but I don’t know. As a human being, it’s probably not good.’”
Reconsideration and Jonah Hill’s Personal Influence
After discussing her decision with her publicist and initially declining the project, Lucci found herself dwelling on the character and the possibility of accepting the role. She shared,
“I couldn’t help myself. I started working on this character.”
She reconsidered the script with fresh eyes, worrying that she might regret missing the experience and watching another actress take on the challenge instead.

“Maybe I should read this again in the light of day. Maybe I should give it another go around because, God, I would hate to watch this and see some other actress take the challenge, and I didn’t take the challenge,”
she said.
The turning point came when Jonah Hill, a known fan of All My Children, personally called Lucci to ask her to reconsider. She recalled,
“He really did have me in mind for this part. And he was so lovely and wonderful to talk to, and I could tell he was really invested in this. By the time we finished talking, I was like, ‘Okay, we’re gonna talk in the morning.’”
The conversation left Lucci feeling a profound sense of gratitude for the project coming her way during such a vulnerable time.
Taking on the Role and Working with the Cast
Following the call, Lucci accepted the role and committed to giving it her best effort. She described the experience positively, saying,
“I was going to accept that challenge. And I was going to do it the best I could. I love that feeling, so I did take it and I was so thrilled. I had a wonderful experience.”
Outcome centers on the character Reef, played by Keanu Reeves, a Hollywood star confronting his past when threatened with revealing video footage. The cast also features Jonah Hill, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Kaia Gerber, David Spade, Laverne Cox, and Roy Wood Jr. Though no release date has been announced, the project has garnered attention due to its notable ensemble and intense storyline.
During her podcast interview, Lucci praised her experience working alongside Reeves, describing him as “a real actor.” She recounted their collaborative process, adding,
“I mean, we did about four passes at it, just between ourselves. And he said, ‘God, I wish we were doing this on Broadway.’ And I said, ‘So do I,’ because you keep finding things.”
Anticipation Surrounding the Film’s Release
How Jonah Hill was able to persuade Susan Lucci to take on this pivotal role demonstrates the compelling nature of Outcome’s script and the strong creative investment behind the film. With a high-profile cast and Hill’s multifaceted role as writer, director, and actor, the movie holds promise for a gripping drama exploring themes of past secrets and personal reckoning.
As fans await more information on Outcome’s release, Lucci’s story highlights the emotional demands actors sometimes face when choosing roles that challenge their own experiences, as well as the impact of personal encouragement from a dedicated filmmaker. Jonah Hill Susan Lucci’s collaboration on this film signals a noteworthy project in both their careers.
