Intuit TurboTax returns to the Super Bowl for its 13th consecutive year featuring a humorous advertisement starring Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody. The ad, created by agency R/GA and directed by Craig Gillespie of MJZ with production support from Radke, showcases Brody tackling tax season in an unexpected, tongue-in-cheek way focused on easing tax-related stress.
Behind the Scenes: The Making of ‘The Expert’ Character
In the commercial, Adrien Brody starts with an emotional monologue performed in the rain, delivering a dramatic intensity that is abruptly halted when the director calls “cut.” Brody plays a character known as “The Expert,” representing the TurboTax experts who promise to remove the difficulty from doing taxes. This twist prompts Brody’s character, known from the film “The Brutalist,” to question his typical brooding roles, as he is asked to embrace a lighter, happier demeanor instead.
Promotion and Release Strategy Across Multiple Platforms
Prior to the Super Bowl spot, a teaser campaign introduced Adrien Brody as “The Expert,” revealing behind-the-scenes footage of him rehearsing in his trailer. The campaign also included wild postings in major cities like New York City and Los Angeles to increase buzz. The full 45-second commercial will air during halftime of Super Bowl LX on February 8th, preceded by a 30-second teaser before the game starts. Additionally, a two-minute extended version of the ad is currently available on TurboTax’s digital platforms, in retail outlets, and in cinemas nationwide.
The Brand’s Continued Super Bowl Presence and Impact
Last year’s TurboTax Super Bowl commercial was directed by Traktor via Stink Films and starred Issa Rae, who also contributed as a writer. With this new campaign, TurboTax aims to maintain its strong presence during the game while highlighting its mission to simplify taxes for Americans. Featuring Adrien Brody as a relatable and somewhat conflicted character adds a thoughtful layer to the brand’s approach, balancing humor with the reality of tax season anxiety.
