Sam Rockwell Teases Armor Wars Return: “Is It Happening?”

Nearly six years after the Disney+ series Armor Wars was initially announced, the project’s status remains unclear despite ongoing interest. Sam Rockwell Armor Wars discussions have resurfaced as the actor hinted at the possibility of returning to the role. Originally planned as a TV series with Yassir Lester hired as Head Writer in August 2021, the project shifted to a movie format in September 2022 but has since faced numerous delays and uncertainty.

Marvel’s Shifting Plans and Limited Momentum

The storyline of Armor Wars would follow War Machine in a conflict involving Stark Industries and the Department of Damage Control, building on events from Spider-Man: No Way Home and Secret Invasion. Despite War Machine’s popularity, there hasn’t been significant demand for the project, as audiences strongly associate the Iron Man legacy with Tony Stark. Potential additions like Ironheart and Justin Hammer have been considered, but the absence of Stark seems to lessen overall interest in the story.

Sam Rockwell Reflects on Potential Collaboration With Walton Goggins

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Sam Rockwell—known for his role as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2—was asked about possibly reuniting with Walton Goggins, his White Lotus co-star, in Armor Wars. Goggins previously played Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and The Wasp, a villain whose connection to Hammer was speculated but remains unresolved.

Oh Armor Wars. Oh, you mean the Marvel thing? Is that being made?

Sam Rockwell remarked.

Walt and I could team up like bad guys, that kind of thing. It’s definitely a fun character. It’d be fun to play either that or a supervillain. It’d be great.

Project’s Place in Marvel’s Post-Secret Wars Landscape

As Marvel Studios moves forward after Secret Wars, there is potential for a new actor to assume the Iron Man mantle, which could increase interest in Armor Wars. However, when Don Cheadle inquired about the project’s progress in October 2024, Sam Rockwell responded with uncertainty.

You can find out and let me know. [Laughs] I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is.

Marvel Studios Emphasizes Quality Over Speed in Project Development

Nate Moore, executive producer of Captain America: Brave New World, explained that Marvel Studios is currently reevaluating its projects to ensure high standards. This approach has contributed to delays for works like Armor Wars, as the creative team prioritizes delivering exceptional content to audiences.

As Marvel [Studios] continues to go through this phase, we want to make sure whatever we’re making is awesome. So that means we had to slow down some things that were on the front burner.

It doesn’t mean we’ll never make it, but it does mean we just have to be a little bit more considered so that every time out, audiences are guaranteed quality.

Iron Man’s Role Critical to Armor Wars’ Success

The consensus within Marvel appears to be that Armor Wars would be most compelling with Iron Man as the central figure. This may explain why the project has been deprioritized until a clear direction involving Iron Man or a new iteration of the character emerges, leaving its fate in question for now.
