James Cameron Reveals Shocking Task in First Film Job

James Cameron’s first role on a major film set involved an unexpected responsibility: distributing cocaine to the crew. This surprising task occurred when he worked as a production designer on the 1980 sci-fi movie Battle Beyond the Stars, after the previous production designer was dismissed.

Early Career and Unusual First Assignment

During an interview with Graham Bensinger on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Cameron described how he landed the role following the firing of his predecessor. On his very first day, the production manager outlined Cameron’s duties and handed him several items. Cameron recalled,

He says, ‘Okay, here’s your petty cash voucher,’

and then,

And here’s this and here’s that, and here’s your swing shift crew list. Here’s your day shift crew list. Okay, here’s your black beauties. Here’s your coke.’ And he’s just putting all this stuff out on the table.

Confused by the inclusion of cocaine, Cameron said,

I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, what do I do with this stuff?’

adding,

I mean, I didn’t take drugs. You know, for me, coffee was plenty.

Understanding the Environment of Low-Budget Film Productions

Cameron later explained that distributing drugs was part of the unconventional culture on low-budget film sets. He remarked,

He said, ‘Well, you got to give it out to the crew,’

then added,

I’m like, so I just became a dealer, I guess? You know, but that was just how things were done in that super low-budget world. You know, ‘will work for coke,’ basically. And that was pretty nuts.

This unusual initiation highlights how different the working conditions were early in Cameron’s career, compared to the major blockbuster productions he would go on to helm.

From Modest Beginnings to Global Success

Since that early experience, James Cameron has directed some of the most iconic and financially successful films in history, including The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic, and the Avatar series. He recently became the first and only director to have four films surpass the $1 billion mark in box office revenue.

Notably, both the original 2009 Avatar and the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, have each grossed over $2 billion worldwide, solidifying Cameron’s reputation as a leading figure in the film industry.

The Impact of Cameron’s Early Film Industry Experience

James Cameron’s early exposure to the challenges and realities of low-budget film production likely shaped his understanding of filmmaking and the industry. His journey from distributing petty cash and cocaine to steering billion-dollar blockbusters demonstrates not only his adaptability but also the drastic changes in film production environments over time.

As Cameron continues to work on upcoming projects, his early experiences serve as a reminder of the unpredictable paths some filmmakers take on their way to success.
