Jamie Lee Curtis Opens Up on Her 27-Year Sobriety Journey

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, 67, revealed on Instagram on February 3 how she has maintained her sobriety for nearly three decades, crediting the late Richard Lewis with playing a crucial role in her recovery. Curtis’s candid transparency sheds light on her long path to overcoming addiction.

The Role of Richard Lewis in Curtis’s Recovery

Reflecting on the start of her sobriety, Curtis shared a heartfelt post alongside a photo of herself and comedian Richard Lewis, describing a moment of pain and seeking help. She wrote,

“27 years ago, I had pain and sorrow. I reached out my hand and my old colleague and friend, Richard Lewis, reached out and took my hand,”

highlighting how that immediate connection began her healing process.

She went on to explain how Lewis introduced her to a supportive community, allowing her to meet many others who were also recovering from addiction.

“The miracle of sobriety is that it just takes one other person to relate to how you’re feeling and THAT can change everything,”

Curtis added.

“Richard introduced me to many others and for these 27 years I have met so many people who share our common link of addiction and recovery from that daily prison.”

Being a Source of Support for Others Facing Addiction

Jamie Lee Curtis expressed a deep commitment to becoming a source of hope for those still struggling with addiction, inspired by the encouragement she received. She wrote,

“I’m honored to be open with strangers, many who know me better than people I have spent my entire life with, and I try to honor all of their courage and strength, and hope daily and do what Richard did, which is reach my hand out to others in need.”

Curtis also paid tribute to Lewis’s enduring impact, saying,

“I miss my friend but his gift to me IS the gift that keeps on giving. @clare.foundation @friendlyhousela.”

The actress has been open about her battles with painkiller and alcohol addiction early on, sharing in a 2019 Variety interview that her dependency began after being prescribed Vicodin following plastic surgery. The surgery was triggered by a cameraman’s comment about her puffy eyes, setting off a chain of events that led to her struggle with substance abuse.

Jamie Lee Curtis’s Private Fight with Addiction

Despite her addiction, Curtis revealed that very few people around her were aware of her condition. She described herself as

“the wildly controlled drug addict and alcoholic,”

noting,

“I never did it when I worked. I never took drugs before 5 p.m. I never, ever took painkillers at 10 in the morning. It was that sort of late afternoon and early evening.”

Her addiction was kept hidden, shared only with those supplying her medication.

Curtis recognized her need for help when she saw others struggling in similar ways. Her first recovery meeting followed after she encountered a 1999 Esquire article titled Vicodin, My Vicodin, by Tom Chiarella, which documented his own addiction battle. Inspired by this story, she began her recovery journey, stepping onto the path of sobriety that has lasted over 27 years.

Jamie Lee Curtis’s openness about this experience highlights the challenges of addiction and the power of support and connection in recovery. Her journey emphasizes that reaching out, accepting help, and offering it to others can be life-changing steps toward freedom from the grip of substance abuse.
