Stephen King’s The Institute Season 2 Adds Game of Thrones Star

The Institute Season 2 has secured a major addition to its cast with Alfie Allen, known for his role in Game of Thrones. This casting announcement arrives shortly after Stephen King confirmed that production on the second season is underway, raising anticipation for the continuation of the series based on King’s novel.

Alfie Allen, who portrayed Theon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones and appeared as a villain in the 2014 film John Wick, is set to join the mysterious world of The Institute. Allen’s recent work includes the limited series Girl Taken, and he will soon reunite with several Game of Thrones alumni for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi project, 3 Body Problem.

Plot and Cast Overview of The Institute

The Institute, adapted from Stephen King’s 2019 novel, centers on Tim Jamieson, a former police officer with a troubled history played by Ben Barnes. Jamieson becomes deeply involved with the Institute, a secretive organization where children exhibiting supernatural abilities are detained for experiments and research.

The story largely follows young Luke Ellis, portrayed by Joe Freeman, who is one of the Institute’s victims and attempts to expose the dark secrets concealed within the facility. Alongside Barnes and Freeman, the series features Mary-Louise Parker as Ms. Sigsby, the Institute’s director. The ensemble cast also includes Fionn Laird, Simone Miller, Hannah Galway, Robert Joy, Martin Roach, and Julian Richings, as well as supporting performances from Dan Beirne, Mary Walsh, Jason Diaz, Brendan Beiser, and Jordan Alexander.

Positive Reception and Series Renewal

Following its release in July 2025 on MGM+, The Institute garnered generally favorable reviews. The first season holds a 64% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 25 critical reviews and a 70% audience rating on Popcornmeter, based on over 250 verified user reviews. The show’s blend of suspense and supernatural elements resonated with both critics and viewers.

In August 2025, MGM+ officially renewed The Institute for a second season. Stephen King responded to the renewal with excitement:

Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute, and I can’t wait.

King’s comment underscores the tense and uncertain atmosphere set to deepen in the upcoming season.

MGM+ head Michael Wright expressed enthusiasm for continuing the story, stating,

The Institute has thrilled audiences with its distinctive storytelling and exceptional performances that expertly bring the singular voice of Stephen King to the screen. We’re so happy to be able to continue and expand this chilling journey and dive even deeper into the secrets of The Institute in season two.

Expectations for Season 2 From Lead Actor Ben Barnes

Following the renewal announcement, Ben Barnes shared his thoughts on what the next season holds, emphasizing character development and relationships. He remarked,

It’s a complete novel and it’s a complete story, but as you start to familiarize yourself with characters, and with their connections and relationships, and their weaknesses and strengths, that’s what’s interesting about it for me,

highlighting the layered storytelling that fans can anticipate.

Barnes further elaborated on the thematic core of Stephen King’s work:

A lot of Stephen King’s work is about challenging the system and about finding the truth in things and also finding hope in each other and in friendship and connection,

and he added,

The most interesting part of the show for me is the dynamic between Tim and Luke, so instead of looking backwards, I think it’d be interesting to see what the future is for them.
