Chris Hemsworth has portrayed Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for 15 years, beginning with the first Thor film back in 2008. Over that time, Hemsworth has transformed the Norse God of Thunder from a relatively obscure Marvel Comics character into a fan favorite. Now set to appear in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Hemsworth reflects on how Thor’s journey within the MCU has resulted in the character finally
“earning his seat at the table,”
a phrase that highlights Thor’s elevated status among the Avengers.
Challenges and Growth Through Different Directors
Hemsworth recently spoke with BroBible about Thor’s evolving role and growth as a character across multiple films. He shared gratitude toward Kenneth Branagh, who directed the original Thor film, describing him as
“one of the best directors and most detailed, collaborative partners.”
According to Hemsworth, Thor’s development was influenced by working under various directors, noting that some had a clearer vision of the character than others. He recalled Joss Whedon admitting the difficulty of writing Thor after the character gained immense power.
“Then I worked with different directors. Some had a clear handle on who they thought the character was, and some didn’t. Even to their own admission — I remember Joss Whedon saying it’s a tricky character to write, especially once he’s acquired that strength. It was really around working with Taika where I was kind of sick of what I’d been doing, and he was like, ‘Yeah, so am I. Let’s explore a different space.’ I hope that brought something unpredictability to the character.” – Chris Hemsworth, Actor
This turning point came with director Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok, when Hemsworth and Waititi sought to explore new dimensions of the character. This fresh approach leaned into humor and unpredictability, setting Ragnarok apart from previous entries and contributing to its critical and commercial success.
Thor’s Changing Presence Among Avengers
In early MCU films, Thor’s role was considered uneven compared to other heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, who often took center stage. However, starting with Ragnarok and continuing through Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Thor’s character gained more depth and emotional weight. Despite mixed reviews for Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022, Hemsworth acknowledged both his challenges and successes in portraying the character’s evolving persona.
“In the more recent films since then, I felt like the character had earned his seat at the table. Before that, I felt like the new guy. I remember sitting around on Doomsday with all these new characters, people in their first Avengers film, and thinking, ‘I have a bit of agency here. I should have a bigger voice or opinion as the character. Owning that a little more, he does feel like one of the elders. He’s 2,000 years old or something, so we tried to play into that more than we had before.” – Chris Hemsworth, Actor
Hemsworth’s reflection underscores how, over time, Thor has transformed from a newcomer to one of the Avengers’ senior figures, both in terms of age and influence. In Avengers: Doomsday, this elder status plays a distinct role, with Thor asserting himself more fully amid a lineup that includes many first-time Avengers.
Looking Ahead to Avengers: Doomsday
The teaser for Avengers: Doomsday hints at a more serious Thor, as Hemsworth’s character prays to his late father Odin for protection before engaging in battle. This tone marks a departure from the frequent humor that came to define Ragnarok’s version of the hero, signaling an emotional and possibly darker storyline. Fans anticipate seeing Thor wielding his weapon, Stormbreaker, against powerful foes, though it remains unclear whether he faces Doctor Doom or another adversary.
Thor’s role as one of the last remaining original Avengers adds further significance to his presence in Avengers: Doomsday. He is set to reunite with familiar characters, including a variant of his brother Loki, offering continuity amid the expanding MCU ensemble. Thor’s fate in the upcoming films carries both narrative weight and emotional stakes, especially with his adoptive daughter Love’s safety at risk. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18.
