Paul Thomas Anderson secured the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, a prize seen as a key indicator of Oscar success. This achievement took place during the 2024 DGA Awards, strengthening anticipation for Anderson’s potential Best Director win at the upcoming Academy Awards.
The Significance of the DGA Award in Predicting Oscar Winners
Since the DGA Awards began in 1948, the recipient of the top theatrical feature director category has matched the Best Director Oscar winner almost every year, except for eight. Notably, the past five winners of this DGA honor have gone on to receive the Oscar for Best Director, underscoring the award’s role as a reliable bellwether for Oscar outcomes. Anderson’s win places him among this prestigious group, suggesting a strong chance for Academy recognition.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s Journey and Speech Highlights
This marks Anderson’s third nomination at the DGA Awards, having been previously recognized for Licorice Pizza in 2021 and There Will Be Blood in 2007. During his acceptance speech, he addressed DGA President Christopher Nolan with humor, referencing Nolan’s own accomplishments, which resonated warmly with the audience. Anderson also paid homage to Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, stating,
“It’s like we’re all here for a reason, some cosmic thing brought us to this room, and it was that call to the mountain. It’s that feeling that we all love making sh-t and we need to do it. We need to do it or it’s an addiction, I’m not quite sure.”

Remembering Adam Somner: A Personal Tribute
Amid the celebratory atmosphere, Anderson delivered a heartfelt tribute to his close friend and longtime first assistant director Adam Somner, who passed away earlier this year due to thyroid cancer. He acknowledged Somner’s vital role in film production safety and emotional support on set, stressing the risks inherent in filmmaking. Anderson said,

“Obviously we are up here, minus one,”
and continued,
“A lot of people in this room know our hero, our man, Adam Somner. Steven [Spielberg] knows him. His wife Carmen [Ruiz de Huidobro] is here.”
Furthermore, he celebrated Somner’s professionalism and kindness:
“He took this work so seriously, and did not take himself seriously at all. And that was a great gift… He made us feel safe. Think about this work that we do, how dangerous it can be, really dangerous. And to be to get through a film and no one get hurt, be safe, have an amazing experience is because of a great AD, and he was the best.”
Anderson became emotional recalling their bond, expressing,
“I wish everyone in this room the love that I had with him, may you be blessed with a relationship that I had with him, and if you have one already, hold them close, remind them that you love them. He would love this. He’d be so f–king happy.”

Context Within Recent DGA and Oscar Winners
Last year’s DGA top prize specifically went to Sean Baker for Anora, who subsequently earned the Best Director Oscar, while the film won Best Picture. Similarly, Christopher Nolan’s DGA win two years ago preceded his Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for Oppenheimer. These trends reinforce Anderson’s position as a favorite for honors this season.
Details on the Competitive DGA Field
This year’s notable DGA nominees alongside Anderson included Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Chloé Zhao for Hamnet, Guillermo del Toro for Frankenstein, and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme. Ryan Coogler’s nomination is especially significant; he is only the fifth Black director nominated in this category, following Spike Lee’s recognition for BlacKkKlansman in 2018. However, no Black filmmaker has yet won this prestigious DGA award.
Chloé Zhao, who won the DGA top award in 2021 for Nomadland — which also received Best Picture and Best Director Oscars — has now joined Kathryn Bigelow, Jane Campion, and Greta Gerwig as the only women to earn multiple nominations in this category. Guillermo del Toro, the 2018 DGA winner for The Shape of Water, was nominated again this year, while Josh Safdie received his first recognition from the guild.
The Broader Impact of Anderson’s Achievement
Paul Thomas Anderson’s DGA win not only affirms his directorial excellence but also heightens expectations for his success at the Academy Awards. Given the historical alignment between the DGA and Oscar outcomes, this victory could mark a pivotal moment in his career and the awards season narrative. His tribute to Adam Somner also reflects the close-knit and emotionally charged nature of the filmmaking community. As awards season continues, Anderson, alongside other distinguished nominees, will likely remain at the center of attention for top directing honors.
