Idris Elba, known for his versatility across various film genres, has embraced a nostalgic role in the new adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Playing Man-At-Arms, the warrior and weapon master of Eternia, Elba reconnects with a beloved franchise from his youth, bringing both his talent and personal history to the part.
Rediscovering a Childhood Favorite Through Iconic Role
Elba has often ventured into diverse cinematic worlds, from cybernetic foes in Hobbs & Shaw to chaotic comic-book craziness in The Suicide Squad; however, stepping into the world of Eternia as Man-At-Arms has special meaning for him. The actor revealed how deeply the Masters of the Universe universe impacted his early years, making this role highly personal.
“It’s a really big part of my childhood,”
Elba shared during an interview with Empire. His connection went beyond casual fandom—he grew up with the He-Man toys and cartoons, immersing himself in the vibrant, fantastical world long before filming began.
He-Man and She-Ra Toys: A Childhood Necessity and Escape
The actor also pointed out a practical reason behind his strong ties to the franchise. Elaborating on his early experiences, he noted that his family couldn’t afford more expensive toys, making He-Man an accessible alternative that became central to his playtime.
“My parents couldn’t afford the Star Wars toys, and the He-Man toys were cheaper, because it wasn’t as big. So I had He-Man, She-Ra, Battle Cat…”
Elba explained, highlighting how these toys opened the door to an imaginative world for him.

The animated series added to that appeal, offering a quirky and fun atmosphere with its distinct tone. Elba fondly remembered,
“The cartoons were always a little bit more fun, a bit more camp, a bit more out-there,”
capturing the unique spirit that set the franchise apart and ultimately influenced his enthusiasm for the new film.
Staying True to the Franchise’s Original Style
Director Travis Knight aimed to retain the essence of the classic toy line and cartoons rather than dilute the franchise’s personality. This creative direction resonated with Elba, who appreciated the respect shown towards the original material.
“Travis, who’s an incredible director, wanted to pay homage to the aesthetic of the original. I was all for that.”
However, embracing the character’s physicality prompted a new challenge for the actor. Reflecting on the demands of the role, Elba admitted,
“Though it made me think, ‘Shit, I’ve gotta get into the gym!’”
Immersed in the Enormity of Eternia’s World
Once filming began, Elba was fully captivated by the project’s scale—from the expansive, detailed sets to the larger-than-life characters brought to life on screen. The experience was reminiscent of the excitement he felt as a child.
“It was like being at a big amusement arcade with all these massive characters,”
Elba remarked, capturing the sense of playfulness that infused the entire production.
For long-time fans of He-Man and newcomers alike, the new Masters of the Universe movie aspires to revive that exhilarating and colorful energy, inviting audiences back into a world where imagination reigns supreme.
