Christopher Nolan and Timothée Chalamet came together on February 10 for a special screening of Interstellar at AMC Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles, presented in Imax 70mm. The event offered fans a rare glimpse behind the scenes, focusing on the powerful moments involving Timothée’s role in the film. The director and actor reflected on key scenes from the sci-fi epic, particularly the emotional sequences featuring Chalamet’s character.
Timothée Chalamet Reflects on His Role in the Film
Though Timothée Chalamet played a relatively small part in Interstellar, his experience working on the project left a lasting impact on him. Addressing the crowd, he shared,
“Though my role is not enormous in Interstellar, I think I was number 12 on the call sheet, this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet. And it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in. It’s the film I’ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history,”
highlighting how formative the experience was.
Creative Tension over a Dark Scene
During their conversation, Nolan and Chalamet discussed a notable scene in which Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, views years of video messages from his children, including Chalamet’s character. Nolan recalled a creative disagreement about how the messages were portrayed.
“When you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing that you were doing where you were hitting quite a dark tone in relation to Murph and had Murph crash the car,”
Nolan explained.
He candidly admitted,
“And it felt too much. I didn’t particularly like it. I told you about it and you just went ahead and did whatever the f–k you wanted and carried on.”
Despite the clash, Nolan saw Chalamet’s determination as a sign of his clear vision:
“But I was like, ‘Okay, he knows what he wants to do and has an idea.’”
Chalamet responded with laughter,
“I didn’t remember that. That’s amazing. I thought you didn’t even know my name man.”
Nolan replied,
“I might not have known your name, but I knew what you were doing…it wasn’t about being stubborn. It was about, you had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices and you didn’t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me. You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn’t. I’ll find a logic to that in the edit suite.”
Ongoing Impact and Future Prospects
The screening and discussion not only emphasized Chalamet’s evolving career but also revealed the complex dynamic between actor and director during the making of Interstellar. Their exchange illustrated the intensity and passion behind key creative decisions, reflecting a restless pursuit of the perfect performance. Outside of this collaboration, Chalamet’s personal life is garnering public interest due to his longer-term relationship with Kylie Jenner and recent remarks about marriage, illustrating how his rising fame continues to influence public conversations.
