Ryan Coogler Reveals Vince Gilligan’s Key Help on X-Files Reboot

Ryan Coogler is actively developing the script for the upcoming reboot of The X-Files, revealing new insights into how Vince Gilligan has been instrumental in supporting the project. Gilligan, known for creating Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Pluribus, contributed extensively to the original X-Files series by Fox as a writer, director, and executive producer. Coogler’s involvement in the reboot reflects his connection to the original show through his mother’s appreciation of it, which motivated him to take on this challenge.

Guidance and Inspiration from Vince Gilligan

During the Deauville American Film Festival in France back in 2013, Coogler encountered Vince Gilligan in an elevator and learned about his significant role in the classic X-Files series. Several years later, Coogler reached out to Gilligan for guidance on reviving the show. He recounted receiving detailed advice during a Zoom meeting where Gilligan patiently answered all his questions.

“Vince gave me a couple hours of advice over Zoom and answered all the questions I had — I’ve got them all in my notebook, and I go back to it often,” Ryan Coogler, director

This was not their only exchange about television production; Coogler previously told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Gilligan’s input had shaped his understanding of making television content.

“There are times when I wish that I could separate and have a day where I’m not anxious about having to deliver the draft,” Ryan Coogler, director

Background and Uncertainties About the Reboot Cast

The original X-Files premiered on Fox, running for nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, followed by two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. The iconic cast includes David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, Robert Patrick as John Doggett, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner. While the reboot is set to launch under Disney’s banner, it remains uncertain if Duchovny and Anderson will return to their legendary roles. At present, the release date for the new series has not been announced.

The Significance of the Reboot and Its Future Outlook

Coogler’s dedication, coupled with Gilligan’s mentorship, hints at a reboot that aims to respect the original’s legacy while potentially attracting a new generation of viewers. Given Coogler’s thorough preparation and the original creative input, expectations are high, though the waiting and uncertainties surrounding casting and scheduling contribute to a cautious and restless anticipation among fans.
