After nearly two decades of stops and starts, Martin Scorsese’s biopic about Frank Sinatra has yet to move forward, despite frequent setbacks. However, Leonardo DiCaprio, who is closely involved, recently confirmed the Martin Scorsese Sinatra film is still being developed, offering a rare sign of hope for the project’s future.
DiCaprio addressed the film’s status while attending the Santa Barbara Film Festival, responding to questions with a sigh that the film is
“still in the works, still in the works,”
as reported by WorldofReel. For a time, Scorsese planned to begin filming the Sinatra biopic in 2024 alongside another project based on Shūsaku Endō’s novel, The Life of Jesus, but those plans have since been shelved.
The Sinatra estate has reportedly posed challenges that have hindered progress on the film. This is not the first time the project has stalled; about ten years ago, Scorsese declared it was effectively dead, stating,
“We can’t do it! I think it is finally over,”
and explaining that the remaining members of the Sinatra family were unwilling to approve the film. He added,
“They [remaining members of the Sinatra clan] won’t agree to it. Open it up again and I’m there! Certain things are very difficult for a family, and I totally understand. But, if they expect me to be doing it, they can’t hold back certain things. The problem is that the man was so complex. Everybody is so complex — but Sinatra in particular.”
Upcoming Collaboration: DiCaprio and Scorsese’s New Film Project
While the Sinatra biopic’s fate remains uncertain, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are moving forward with another collaboration. The pair will begin production soon on What Happens at Night, with shooting scheduled to start in Prague within weeks.

The film’s storyline centers on an American married couple who travels to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They stay at a large, mostly empty hotel where they encounter intriguing characters including a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. The couple’s journey to claim the child gradually reveals unsettling truths about their own lives and relationship. DiCaprio will star alongside Jennifer Lawrence, with Mads Mikkelsen and Patricia Clarkson also part of the cast.
What Happens at Night is financed and produced by Apple Original Films. Its screenplay, written by Patrick Marber, adapts the novel by Peter Cameron.
The Significance of Scorsese’s Sinatra Film and What Lies Ahead
Martin Scorsese’s Sinatra biopic has symbolized a complicated intersection of artistic ambition, family sensitivities, and production challenges. The film’s prolonged development reflects the difficulty of portraying someone as multifaceted as Sinatra authentically, especially given his family’s reluctance to share elements of his life. Leonardo DiCaprio’s recent remarks suggest the project has not been abandoned completely, despite repeated delays.
The Sinatra biopic’s potential realization could add a significant chapter to Scorsese and DiCaprio’s storied collaboration history. Meanwhile, their upcoming project, What Happens at Night, indicates that the partnership continues to thrive, promising audiences new cinematic experiences even as the Sinatra story remains unresolved.
