Early Life and Background

Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen was born on 22 November 1965 in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is the son of Bente Mikkelsen and Henning Dittmann Mikkelsen, a cab driver. He and his older brother, the actor Lars Mikkelsen, were raised in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen.

In his youth, Mikkelsen trained as a gymnast and dreamed of an athletic career, but he eventually shifted his focus to dance. He studied at the Balettakademien, the ballet academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he became fluent in Swedish. During his years as a professional dancer, he met choreographer Hanne Jacobsen, whom he would later marry in 2000.

After nearly a decade as a dancer, Mikkelsen decided to change direction. He enrolled at the Århus Theatre School in 1996 to study drama, which marked the beginning of his acting career.
