Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has offered a rare look into his experiences dealing with celebrity visitors at the Welsh club since the takeover by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2018. The spotlight on the club has grown considerably amidst the owners’ involvement and the production of the documentary “Welcome to Wrexham.”
Parkinson’s Encounter with Will Ferrell During His Visit
Since Phil Parkinson’s appointment as Wrexham manager in July 2021, he has overseen the team’s impressive rise from the National League to the Championship. Along the way, Parkinson has hosted various famous visitors, including actor Will Ferrell, who came to the Racecourse Ground alongside Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2023. Parkinson shared that their brief conversation centered on Ferrell’s genuine interest in the sport and the club’s players.
Reflecting on the meeting, Parkinson said,
“I chatted to him [Ferrell] in my office with Ryan for about ten minutes. He loves the sport and was asking about a few of our players.”

He further emphasized the down-to-earth nature of the celebrities in relation to the team’s environment:
“They’re just normal people and I’d like to think they’ve all enjoyed their experience coming to Wrexham. What player at that level gets that opportunity? I never want to deprive people that chance because that’s part of being here.”

Balancing Increased Media Attention with Team Focus
Parkinson acknowledged the difficult but necessary task of balancing celebrity appearances with maintaining team discipline and focus on the pitch during busy periods. With “Welcome to Wrexham” filming behind the scenes, the manager highlighted the challenge of integrating media exposure without letting it affect training and match preparation.

He explained,
“We’ve met celebrities when Rob and Ryan come to town, but we’ve been very conscious to separate the two – ‘Yes, that’s great, but now the focus is back on the training pitch. We’re ready again to go.’”

Commenting on the unusual level of scrutiny for a club at their tier, Parkinson remarked,
“The exposure and the attention we’ve had since day one has been unprecedented for the levels we’ve operated at. It’s been different, but it’s been a really enjoyable challenge. Lots of balancing acts to try and get right. I feel, so far, we are doing a good job of it.”

Owners’ Support and the Trust in Club Management
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney expressed strong faith in Parkinson’s leadership recently, indicating he has a “job for life” at Wrexham. Parkinson shared his positive view of the owners’ approach, emphasizing their willingness to let trusted professionals manage the football operations despite their relative newness to the sport business.
He said,
“The game is littered with stories of owners coming in and finding it very tough. Rob and Ryan have come in, they’re on the other side of the Atlantic and they’re learning about the industry as they go along.”

He added,
“But they’ve put really good people in place. The key to it is they’ve trusted people to do their job and they’ve been rewarded.”

Addressing Misconceptions About the Club’s Financial Spending
Despite the acquisition of 13 new players for a combined fee of £33 million during the summer, with further additions including Zak Vyner, Bailey Cadamarteri, and Davis Keillor-Dunn arriving in January, Parkinson addressed rumors about Wrexham’s financial position. He cautioned against exaggerated media reports regarding transfer fees and wages, noting the club’s commitment to sensible value-based decisions.
He stated,
“We’ve spent money and people love to make a bigger thing of that on the outside. Every time we bid £2m for a player, it’s £6m in the press. If we offer a player X a week, somewhere it filters that we’ve offered about four times that.”

Parkinson also insisted,
“People love to exaggerate that, but I can assure you there’s plenty of deals we’ve moved away from when we haven’t felt there was value for money or we felt the player was not coming here for the right reasons.”

The Growing Significance of Celebrity Influence and Club Development
The involvement of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, along with celebrity visitors like Will Ferrell, has undeniably increased global interest in Wrexham FC. This has brought both opportunities and challenges as the club navigates higher leagues and rising expectations. Parkinson’s reflections illustrate the fine line between embracing star power and maintaining a professional football environment focused on success.
Looking ahead, the ability to manage increased media attention and celebrity interactions while keeping the squad prepared will remain crucial as Wrexham aims to solidify their Championship status and build a lasting legacy under their unique ownership.
