Prometheus’s Unexpected Return to Streaming Popularity

Prometheus, a sci-fi entry linked to the Alien franchise, has become a prominent streaming sensation worldwide. According to FlixPatrol data, the movie first appeared on Netflix’s global charts on February 17 and quickly rose to number one the next day. It now ranks as the most-watched film across multiple territories, illustrating its strong ongoing appeal.

Other Alien franchise titles are also currently trending on streaming platforms: 2024’s Alien: Romulus has been a major success on Prime Video and holds seventh place in Spain on HBO Max. Meanwhile, Alien: Covenant from 2017 thrives on PVOD services, topping charts in Moldova and ranking in the top five in Cyprus and Namibia. Additionally, several franchise entries have made appearances on Hulu’s platform in Japan, reinforcing the series’ broad international reach.

What Makes Prometheus a Controversial Film?

Prometheus represents the fifth film in the Alien series and marked director Ridley Scott’s return to the franchise since the original 1979 film. Positioned as a prequel and set in the late 21st century, it follows the crew of the titular spaceship. While promoted as connected to the Alien universe, Scott was adamant it was “not an Alien prequel,” distancing it from direct ties to previous installments.

The movie sparked debate due to its departure from established lore, introducing new characters and philosophical questions about the origins of the Xenomorph species but stopping short of definitive answers. Critics and fans alike questioned the portrayal of scientists in the story, which added to the film’s contentious reputation.

Despite mixed reactions over its narrative ambiguity, Prometheus attained commercial success, grossing $403.4 million globally against a production budget estimated between $120 million and $130 million. Critical response was generally positive, with a 73% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a favorable 68% audience approval.

The cast featured prominent actors such as Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, Michael Fassbender portraying the android David, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron, bringing significant star power to the project.

Future Directions within the Alien Universe

The Alien franchise, initiated in the late 1970s, remains active with multiple projects underway. After Prometheus, Ridley Scott continued by directing Alien: Covenant and has expressed intentions to develop a sequel to that film. His involvement with upcoming Alien projects suggests ongoing evolution for the series under his guidance.

Beyond Scott’s contributions, the franchise is expanding in other directions. Alien: Romulus is set to receive a sequel, with filmmaker Fede Álvarez stepping down from directing duties but remaining involved as the scriptwriter. Additionally, the television adaptation Alien: Earth premiered in 2025, garnering critical acclaim and strong streaming performance, and has been renewed for a second season.

Currently, Prometheus is accessible for digital rental or purchase, allowing new and returning viewers to explore this polarizing but influential chapter of the Alien saga.
