Charlize Theron (born 7 August 1975) is a South African and American actress and producer. One of the world’s highest-paid actresses, she has earned numerous accolades, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She first gained international prominence in the 1990s by playing the leading lady in the Hollywood films The Devil’s Advocate, Mighty Joe Young, and The Cider House Rules.

Theron is widely recognized for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and became the first South African to win an acting Oscar. Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, in the Transvaal Province of South Africa, on 7 August 1975. She is the only child of road constructionists Gerda and Charles Theron. Her father, who was an alcoholic, was killed by her mother in 1991 in an incident that was legally ruled as self-defense. Theron is from an Afrikaner family, with Dutch, French, and German ancestry, and her first language is Afrikaans.

She grew up on her parents’ farm in Benoni, near Johannesburg, and attended Putfontein Primary School, where she has said she struggled to fit in. She suffered from jaundice throughout her childhood, and the antibiotics she took caused her baby teeth to rot, requiring surgical removal. As a teenager, she was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, where she trained in the performing arts.

Although she originally saw herself as a dancer, Theron won a one-year modelling contract at age 16 at a local competition in Salerno, Italy, and moved with her mother to Milan. After spending a year modelling across Europe, she relocated to the United States with her mother, living in New York City and Miami. In New York, she trained as a ballet dancer at the Joffrey Ballet School until a knee injury ended that career path.
