Mark Wahlberg recently discussed the difficulties he faces when gaining weight for his film roles, emphasizing the strain the process puts on his body. Known for maintaining a strict workout routine and healthy habits, Wahlberg shared how altering his lifestyle for weight gain has become one of the most demanding parts of his acting preparation.
In a February 18 interview on The View, Wahlberg explained that he is currently preparing for a movie role that requires him to significantly increase his calorie intake. He confessed,
“I’m actually in the middle of making, or preparing to make, a movie right now where I have to put on weight. I’m eating everything and anything in sight,”
illustrating the extent to which he must adapt his diet.
Physical and Emotional Struggles with Weight Gain
Wahlberg noted that while overeating can feel somewhat enjoyable at first, the appeal quickly fades.
“Putting on weight is fun for about a week,”
he said, identifying that the initial novelty soon gives way to discomfort and health challenges. After weeks of consuming calorie-dense meals, he noticed physical side effects such as swelling. Wahlberg revealed,
“My feet are swollen when I wake up… My hands are swollen,”
highlighting the toll such transformations exact on his body.
This is not Wahlberg’s first experience with dramatic weight changes. For his 2022 film Father Stu, he had to similarly bulk up, a process he described as “really difficult” and “not healthy.” Reflecting on that experience, Wahlberg admitted,
“I vowed the last time I did it, about a year ago, that I wasn’t going to do it again… And here I am,”
showing the reluctant acceptance of the demands required by his profession. He added,

“But it’s kind of what the part requires, and so, I got to get through.”
Weight Loss Easier Than Weight Gain, Wahlberg Explains
During the interview, host Joy Behar asked about the challenges Wahlberg faces when shedding the extra pounds. He responded by saying that losing the weight does not pose a significant struggle.
“For what it’s worth, I don’t have a hard time losing it, even with me, with fasting and exercise. But putting it on is just hard. You don’t want to eat when you already are full,”
he explained.
Wahlberg also reflected on the emotional complexity of eating unhealthy foods during this process.
“And I started to enjoy the things I hadn’t enjoyed in a while when I realized they kind of make you feel bad, ultimately, at the end of the day,”
he said, indicating a growing awareness of the mental and physical consequences involved.
The Demanding Nature of Transformation for Acting Roles
Mark Wahlberg’s candid remarks shed light on the intense physical and mental challenges actors often face when altering their bodies for roles. Despite the hardships involved, he remains committed to meeting the demands of his characters. His experience underscores the broader pressures in the film industry surrounding body image changes and the health risks actors navigate to deliver authentic performances.
As Wahlberg continues to prepare for his upcoming film, his honest account highlights the resilience required to handle the discomfort and uncertainty that come with such drastic shifts, emphasizing the depth of dedication behind the scenes.
