John Waters, the cult gay director and writer, has announced that he will appear in the upcoming 13th season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story. The revelation came during a recent spoken word event in his hometown of Baltimore, where Waters hinted at a significant part in the series.
John Waters’ Announcement at Baltimore Soundstage
At the Baltimore Soundstage, Waters excitedly shared,
“I’m going to announce tonight something new: I can’t say what role, but I have a big new part in American Horror Story,”
signaling his return to the hit horror anthology.
He added a humorous note about his typical typecasting, joking,
“I’m typecast. I’m always either the devil or Chucky’s father… I’ve always been trying to steal Vincent Price’s career,”
reflecting on his past horror roles.
Ryan Murphy first revealed plans for Season 13 last Halloween, with the season expected to premiere around Halloween this year. Production is set to begin shortly, generating excitement among fans.
Returning Stars and New Cast Members for Season 13
The new season will see the return of several familiar faces, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, and Jessica Lange, despite Lange’s earlier statement that she would not come back. Notably, many of these actors appeared together before in Season 3, titled Coven.
Adding fresh talent, pop superstar Ariana Grande is slated to make her American Horror Story debut in this season, promising to bring new energy to the ensemble cast.
With so many prominent cast members returning, speculation grows among viewers that Season 13 might be connected to Season 3 and could possibly serve as the series’ final installment, although no official confirmation about a 14th season has been released.

John Waters’ Multifaceted Career in Film and Television
Known as the self-proclaimed “Pope of Trash,” Waters is renowned for directing and writing cult classics such as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Serial Mom. He frequently appears in his own films and has taken on notable horror roles, including parts in Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat (2002), Seed of Chucky (2004), and Suburban Gothic (2014).
This will not be Waters’ first collaboration with Ryan Murphy. In 2017, he portrayed director William Castle in Murphy’s FX series Feud: Bette and Joan. Waters also featured in the recent Chucky TV series and has had multiple appearances on Law & Order.
Reflecting on his television work during his Baltimore appearance, Waters said,
“I’ve been on Law and Order lots of times and I love being on it. I get such great residuals. They show Law and Order over and over and over. There are whole channels that just play that.”
Building Anticipation and What Lies Ahead
As filming for Season 13 prepares to start, the combination of veteran actors and fresh faces is sparking considerable excitement. John Waters American Horror Story involvement is especially notable given his unique presence in both cult cinema and horror genres. The connection to Season 3’s Coven storyline hints at a potentially thrilling narrative arc for fans.
While the show’s creators have not yet confirmed whether Season 13 will mark the end of the series, the anticipation surrounding its release this Halloween continues to grow, making it one of the most awaited television events of the year.
